Swelling

My due date is 11-11, 8 days away! As of last Friday, I have made no progress yet according to my doctor. Which worries me that this baby is going to be in there a lot longer than 8 days. Last night when I was going to bed, I took my socks off, and there was a pretty deep line from swelling around my calf! I haven't noticed much swelling at all, especially this bad! I've only gained about 25 pounds and drink lots of water every day, and I sit at a desk all day long. I told one of my coworkers about this, and she said maybe I'm going to have the baby soon! This got me excited, so I just wanted to know if other people have linked sudden swelling and labor??

Re: Swelling

  • I haven't heard of swelling necessarily being linked to labor. I have heard it being a symptom of pre-eclampsia, especially if it comes on suddenly. I have also heard that it comes along with your baby dropping since the baby puts more pressure on your legs and cuts off circulation. Swelling in general is a pregnancy symptom, so I am not sure what to tell you!

I will say that I am jealous you are just getting swollen....I have been that way for weeks! I think mine is attributed to my hypertension though.

  • i could have written this post...down to the due date!  i just noticed some swelling in the last few days.  i've gained under 25lbs so far, have had no progress as of last week, and am worried the baby is moving up instead of down!  ha ha.  i hope swelling means something is happening soon.  good luck!

  • ditto to all of that too!

I'm due 11/11 and just noticed swelling yesterday in my feet.  So... maybe it's just our time to start swelling up like balloons :)

  • I have been swelling for months and have until 11/24 till I am due! I drink lots of water and put my feet up when I get home. According to my doctor, I have no pre-e concerns and my dimise is the fact that I sit at a desk all day long. You said you do to so I am thinking it is just the retention of water pooling in your feet and ankles. I try as hard as I can to walk during my day at work to get the circulation going but I still sit with swollen, stinging feet. So far I have had no contractions and dilation so I cannot connect to labor at all. GL
  • I've been having similar swelling over the past couple of weeks - only in my lower legs and feet. I asked the doctor about it and she said that it's because I have a desk job. My belly is so big now (and I've only put on about 15 pounds this pregnancy) that it's cutting off the circulation to my legs. I notice the swelling is much less on days that I spend running around the office rather than sitting and on weekends when I can either put my feet up or get out and walk.

  • I would definitely consult your doctor on this topic.  I was not swollen at all and was still wearing my wedding bands comfortably.  Within a couple days, they wouldn't even fit my pinky finger.  My doctor sent me to L&D for monitoring (blood work, 24-urine collection, sonogram) and we found out my blood pressure was high. Long story short, all they concluded at that point was baby was sitting right on my stomach making me feel full all time; I wasn't eating enough.  Baby took the nutrients and my body was hoarding water.

A few days after this though, even with the addition of several protein/fiber-rich snacks, I was still swollen and was getting headaches (a sure sign of pre-e).  Although all the tests came back negative, now I'm on bed rest and I'm not close to having baby.  OB said it will be at least a couple more weeks and being swollen, although a somewhat normal pregnancy symptom, is not something to get excited about or brush off, either.
