3rd Trimester

3rd Tri & Extreem Stress = what for the baby?

Are there any books or reading material that cover the effects of extreem and continued stress and the 3rd Tri effects (affects?)?  Huge things, like abuse, or job dynamics, or nasty long drawn divorce involving child-safety or death in family or say all those things at once (note: these are just hypotheticals...but the picture is high-pressure and ongoing, not just "we aren't getting along" type fights).

Re: 3rd Tri & Extreem Stress = what for the baby?

  • I just googled high stress and 3rd trimester, and all I found was info regarding depression. I am curious too. Looking forward to any other replies..

  • First I am praying for you and your LO. secondly, I have looked it up for you... it's all preliminary research so for what it's worth it isn't 100% and it seems to suggest that the critical time to be stress free for the baby is 1st tri.

  • I don't know about any books, but I know that for me personally, being under extreme stress put me into preterm labor at 33 weeks.

  • From what I've heard, the idea is that the baby will prepare itself for the outside world by "interpreting" how the mother usually is.  If she's high stress all the time, then the baby will prepare itself for a high stress world and be a high stress baby.  I'm probably not explaining it well, but I hope that makes sense.
  • Thanks all - I would appreciate prayers for my coping.

This has been my understanding as well, but I'm not sure where I pulled that belief from.  In my past (there is a severely large gap of years between this and my last pregnancy) I don't recall health issues after birth, but I do see a difference that very well could fit squarely into the above example in how they behave even on a day-to-day and interact with individuals.  (I was in an abusive relationship during the one pregnancy, and within 9 months, already pregnant and going through the necessary divorce...it was high-stress all the way.  Right now I'm dealing with toxic relatives, estrangement and a teen with medical problems that is going a bit wayward and I'm starting to really feel it as things are ramping up here.
