Soothing to sleep all day long

I feel like all I do is soothe DD to sleep. She won't go down drowsy but awake. She fell asleep swaddled in the swing twice but will have none of it anymore. It's rocking, bouncing or walking all the time. And lately, she will only sleep on us. If we put her down, she will grunt herself awake. We may be in  the 3 week growth spurt, but i don't know. I still have a bit of an oversupply and I BF. She has been nursing a bit more, but not really. She's definitely grown. But the grunting and not being put down are wearing on me. When she's awake, she's generally happy but she gets overtired SO fast. Then I pretty much have to fight her to sleep :(

  • I think a lot of times we overestimate how much time newborns stay awake... they can really only be awake for very short periods of time before getting overtired.  For the first six to eight weeks or so, they're growing so fast and sleeping so much that yeah, you do pretty much end up soothing them to sleep all day long.  Have you looked into getting a Moby or sleepy wrap carrier?  It's a lifesaver those first few months when all baby wants to do is sleep in your arms!

  • This is exactly what I feel like I'm doing.  I squeeze in an extra nap in the crib in the am, which is a godsend.  And the rest of the day I can put her down in the PNP a few times for about 20 mins. if I'm lucky - long enough to make a sandwich and maybe throw in a load of laundry.  Other than that she wants to be held!  Sorry I can't offer you more than an I'm-there-too!  I'm eager to see if anyone has ideas or some it'll-get-betters!

I  so know this. DS was crazy overtired but fought sleep. So sleep is really important over here, And she was able to get to sleep pretty easily early on. This morning, she woke to poop, I put her in er bouncer for a few min to get coffee and shove cereal down my throat, changed her diaper then already it was a fight to get her to sleep. And when she's fighting, we can rock or bounce, but she's physically struggling against sleep...flailing her arms (well, trying b/c she's swaddled) and fussing, grunting, arching, etc. as I am trying to soothe :( makes me so sad b/c I know she's just overtired.

  • Both DS and DD slept in the moby or ergo during the day for the first 6 or 7 weeks.  It was tiring for me, but at least they weren't crying and got the sleep they needed. Helped the nights be a little more calm. I walked a lot of laps around the couch but I could watch tv while doing that and they slept. It worked for us. You could try that.
