Pumping at work question...supply ?

So I had hoped to be able to pump 3x a day at work but it looks like I'm realistically going to only be able to pump 2x per day. So now that ds is taking more ounces I am not quite pumping enough during the day for the 4 bottles I send to daycare - I'm usually shy one full bottle. Would you add a pumping session at night to cover it? Or supplement by sending from my frozen milk stash?

Appreciate any thoughts or suggestions on what worked for you.

Re: Pumping at work question...supply ?

  • I would probably do both. When I was working/pumping, I would always pump in the evening and in the early morning right before I fed DS for the morning. I would pump one side and nurse off the other. This helped to increase my supply but while that was working, I always used my freezer stash. For me, there came a time around 10 months where my pumping supply seriously dwindled so I was glad that I threw in 1-2 extra pumping sessions a day and was able to use my freezer stash until about 14 months. On the weekends though, I would never pump, I just nursed a ton and that helped to increase my supply for my weekly pumping.

  • With DD, I got up at midnight every night for the first 6 months and pumped. I had crazy supply at night and would get a solid 6-8 ounces every time that went straight to stash (and to cover any that I was short from daytime pumpings). At 6 months, I started just pumping before bed. I'd only get 3-4 ounces then, but it was enough to cover any ounces that I needed to make up.

With DS, I just didn't have the energy this time around to keep getting up. (And he's not as good of a sleeper as DD was, so I'm still getting up with him once a night, too.) So around 3 months I started just pumping before bed.

FWIW, I am only pumping 2 x at work. I nurse DS at 7 before I leave, then I pump at 10:30 and 2, and then I nurse DS at 5 when we get home and again at 7ish before bed. He only takes the two bottles (6 ounces at 10:30 and 2), though.

    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • I had to pump in the morning (fed on one side, pumped the other), twice at work and before bed to regularly have enough for the next day.
  • I was in the same situation. I did my best to do 3 sessions at work, but couldn't keep that up for too long. DD was drinking more milk at daycare than I was pumping during the day. I ended up adding a pumping session at night right before I went to bed (and pumped before she woke up for the day).
  • For the longest time I nursed in the morning and then still pumped 6oz (at least) after she was done.  Is that an option?
