gender-neutral clothing

I went shopping for some simple pants for our daughter the other day. We have another one on the way, so I was hoping to find some things that we could keep and hand down, whether it was a boy or girl. 

It is impossible to find anything that is gender neutral!! I was so frustrated by my shopping trip - all the girl stuff was very, very pink and had flowers and sparkles and really couldn't be worn by a girl. All the boy stuff is covered in blue and brown and cars and football teams - I think it would  look weird on a girl.

Anybody know where I can find gender-neutral clothing and shoes? I'm not much of a girly-girl myself, so I have trouble dressing her in pink-sequined sneakers for running around in the playground...

    How about blue jeans, just plain ones, not the kind w/designs on them.  I found a couple in my bins that had been DDs that work find on DS.  Not sure about shirts.  DD did always like fleece pullovers, and blue was her favorite color for the longest time, so I've got a few of those I can reuse, too.

    For shoes, I had several shoes for DD that were like trail shoes (I think they were Columbia brand from zappos.com) - I had them for her in blue, and another similar pair from Target in brown.   At the time I got those colors because they matched a lot of her play clothing.  Now I've got DS, and we just came across those shoes (which I had saved) and they'll be perfect for him, too.

    I always had to head to the boy section.  There I could find non-ruffled, non-bell bottom pants and plain shirts.  Try carter's for pants or better still -- Wal-Mart.  Say what you will but those Garanimals stuff works and is cheap.  And very plain!  Along with the jeans, look for overalls too, very plain.  Target sometimes has plain stuff as well but you have to hunt around for it.  Gymboree also sometimes has some plain things -- turtlenecks, t-shirts, pants.

    And yeah, I'm not girly either and DD is currently at school in ruby red sequined mary janes from Stride Rite.  I definitely lost that bling battle once she had a say.

    Converse, plain blue or black jeans, almost anything that isn't sports themed.

    I second the Garanimals clothes, as much as I don't like wal-mart, these are very decent clothes for the money.

    yeah, i pretty much don't shop in stores b/c of this. my eyes burn with all the darn pink. i do a lot of shopping online- Old Navy, Crazy8, Children's Place, zulily, etc. i'm proud to say we own not ONE pink and/or sparkly outfit. sure SOME of her shirts might have pink in it but i really try to avoid it all costs. until she can tell me she wants pink, there will be NO pink.

    How about Kohl's?  I have to admit that Michael has been very lucky (and Mommy's pocketbook) that he has been give lots of hand me downs so I have not shopped much.

    I don't know how dressy you want to get, but we found unadorned fleece pants (think sweatpants) at BRU in colors like grey and navy blue.  The coordinated fine with the onesies we had, and they did not have ruffles on the bum like all of the pink and purple ones!
    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.

    We didnt' find out the sex of our baby before he was born and I got alot of gender neutral clothing.  It was mostly greens and yellows.  I have also seen quite a bit of those colors at BRU.  They also had sweat pants and regular pants in khaki and blue jean that didn't have any adornment on them
