I don't get the whole membrane stripping thing. I mean, I know what it is - the physical act, but it seems like everyone is getting it done before 40 weeks just because they're sick of being pregnant/want to see their baby...Is that essentially inducing labor? Is that something doctors will just do because you ask?
I guess it just seems a little odd to me that people keep saying "i'm planning on getting my membranes stripped on date xyz"
someone, enlighten me!!
Re: membrane stripping?
It doesn't cause labor, but it can put you over the edge if you are close. I had mine stripped yesterday, although I didn't have high hopes that it would help. As I expected, it did absolutely nothing except make me bleed and cramp. I will absolutely have it done again next week. It certainly doesn't hurt anything.

This was me. I was being induced at 39 weeks...I had my membranes stripped at 37 weeks and 38 weeks in hopes of it sending me into labor, but it didn't and I was induced. It doesn't hurt, and it won't send you into labor unless your body and baby are ready, so I don't see any harm in it.
