Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I'm so upset... people are so selfish

My MIL asked us to bring DS to see her on halloween so she could see his costume. No biggie, we had planned on it anyway. We get there and she's in her bath robe, looking awful and says "don't get too close, I have the flu." Ummmm wtf, seriously. I was so mad, we stayed for about 10min and left.

Fast forward to tonight. I go out with a few girlfriends for dinner, and bring DS. My friend lives close to a few places to eat. We walked to dinner, had a great time. She says, why don't I give D a bath at her place, get him ready for bed in case he falls asleep on the way home. Great idea! We have D in the tub and he started vomiting everywhere!!!! He threw up like 5 times. :-( He threw up on the way home (my friend came with me so I could sit in the back with him). And has thrown up twice since. He is so pathetic right now. I'm so mad at MIL. Could be a coincidence, but I doubt it.

I did however, realize my friend is the most amazing person, as she was so helpful and reassuring to me and my son.

Suggestions for helping my baby boy feel better quick? I have a call in to the on call pedi. :-( He's sleeping now...

  • Aww, poor guy! That sucks. Just try to keep him hydrated. If he can't keep anything down then give the pedi a call.

FWIW, if your MIL had the flu (fever, body aches, headache, sore throat, etc), that's completely different from a stomach bug that causes vomiting and diarrhea.

  • I hate when people don't tell you they're sick.  It is selfish.  However, I have a hard time thinking you being there for just 10 mnutes made him sick.  I hope he feels better...puking sucks and even worse when it's a baby.

I find that sometimes people call anything that makes them feel like shiit the flu.

Totally, and it's one of my pet peeves, lol.

OP, I hope your LO feels better soon.

  • I think I remember learning in HS that the incubation period from exposure to sickness is like 2 weeks, so your MIL wouldn't have been the one who gave LO the flu.

Regardless, I hate when people do that too.

Nope, incubation for most stomach viruses are from several hours to 2 days. Incubation for "The Flu" (as in: influenza) is from 1-4 days.

This.  Especially in small children, when DD had the stomach flu the dr. told us to think of where we were a day or two before she showed symptoms.

  • Sometimes I think people don't understand that when they are sick they shouldn't be around small children.  A friend recently did the same thing and I almost had to ask her to leave.

  • Sorry your little guy is feeling crummy.  Completely inconsiderate and rude of your MIL.

If it's any consilation my IL's pulled something similar last Thanksgiving and waited til we were in the car and on the way to their house for Thanksgiving dinner  to say they both had been really sick with colds all week, "Oh but dont worry we got antibotics from our doc 2 days ago so we are fine."  Umm first of all your doc is an idiot who way over perscribes antibotics and second of all you didn't think maybe you should have told us before now?!

So yeah fast forward 3 days my DH is as sick as a dog, then a week later I get it then a week after that DD gets it.  We seriously spent from the first week of December thru the beginning of February dealing with fall out from that, since DD ended up with Broncilitis (the week of Christmas no less), then a double ear infection that was antibotic resistant for over a month.  My DH has a comprimed immune system and asthma and he picks up everything so for them to pull this seriously made me livid.

Right!  Who vomits when they have the flu?  It's 2 different things.

I think being there for 10 min might have caused it because baby or mom could have touched a door handle, light switch, anything that would spread whatever she had.

I hope your little guy starts feeling better and it doesn't spread to you or DH.
