Is there a timeframe that you need to start pumping to build a stash?

I would like to start building a stash for when I am away from LO. The first day I will be away for more than a couple hours he will be about 7 weeks old. I don't go back to work until March 5th when he will be 5 months and will want an even bigger stash by then. I have tried to pump once a day but have really struggled finding the time and DS constantly wants to eat so I am always afraid I will pump and then he will be hungry again. I also try to nap at least some of the time when he sleeps because I am so darn tired. So anyways...my question is...do you need to start adding an extra pumping by a certain time in order for your body to increase production or will it adapt at anytime to the extra pumping sessions?

Thanks ladies!

  • You can try pumping after nursing maybe every other session during the day first. If  your body thinks LO needs more then idealy  your body will make more. This may help you to increas your supply. It might take a couple weeks or so but you have time. GL

  • I began by pumping just after his morning feed and right before I went to bed at night, so at ~9PM at the time.  I started at ~3 wks old and did 15 min pumping sessions.  I've continued with the morning pump but dropped the nighttime one at ~3 mo b/c it was annoying me.  I have a few hundred oz in the freezer now.

  • Your body should be able to adjust later on. Recently I got lazy about doing my 10 pm pumping session, and I got behind and had to use several bags of my freezer stash in one week. So the next week I resolved to do the 10 pm session all week. On Monday I only got 2 ounces, but by Wednesday it was up to 4 and now I get 4-5 every night.

My supply really went up around 6 weeks, I'm not sure if that's common or just me, but before that I felt like I was barely keeping up, but between 6-10 weeks I was able to build a decent stash, I think about 60 ounces.

  • I plan to start pumping once a day next week.  I go back to work in early January, and I'd like to have a small stash built up (in addition to the EBM we will need to introduce bottles soon).
