April 2011 Moms

positional plagiocephaly

My son has a flat head :( He will have to wear a helmet. I need to call my insurance company to see if they will pay for it if not my pedi has a helmet program. Once I find out about the insurance they will set up an appointment with their head specialist... poor baby!

In other news, he is healthy! Weighing in a a whopping 20 lbs and is 28 1/2 inches long! The pedi said he was skinny for his length! No one has ever called my son skinny!

Any other April moms dealing with positional plagiocephaly?

Re: positional plagiocephaly

  • My daughter doesn't have positional plagiocephaly, but she did have/has some asymmetry in her forehead due to Torticollis impacting the bones in her head.  Her pedi wanted her to be fitted for a helmet, but her PT said that it wouldn't do anything to help her neck and jaw which are the real issue.  LO goes to weekly therapy for her neck and they are working on fixing the bone allignment.  With the therapy, the bones are fixing themselves.

I know that my insurance only covered 80% of the cost for the helmet.

Good luck to your skinny baby :)

  • My daughter was diagnosed with craniosynostosis and is having surgery next week. It is where the sutures (soft spots) on her head closed too soon. This website was helpful and also has info on positional plagiocephaly- cappskids.org. Hope this helps you out.
  • I've been worried about DS's flat head since he was 2 months.  The doctors just keep saying "we'll see if it corrects itself".  But at the 6 month appt the Dr finally said it might be time to start thinking about the helmet.  So we are going back to see her at 7 months if he hasn't improved we are going to see a specialist.  She said we will probably need to go get the 3-D photos of his head, aparently it is easier to tell if the helmet is needed from the photos.

I really didn't want him to get a helmet, but I'm okay with it now.  I'm thinking of it like braces - no one likes getting them, but they like the results.

DS is also a big boy - 28 inches and 23.5 lbs at 6 months!

  • I am waiting for some code so I can confirm with my insurance company about the cost of the helmet. After I finally get that taken care of they will set up the appointment with the specialist. My poor son never had a chance after 4 1/2 hours of pushing! My mean aunt asked if he was a member of the Conehead family (that SNL skit) I wonder if it is common in bigger babies?

Did they give you an idea of how much it would cost and how long your LO would have to wear it? I feel so bad about his head, but I tried really hard to help him fix it naturally :(

  • My baby was born in March and has already worn his helmet for five weeks. His head has gotten much better, and he's going for a second fitting for a second helmet. It is not bad at all, so don't worry. He had no trouble wearing it or sleeping in it. He even looked really cute in it. Lots of people asked us why he's wearing it and were really nice about it. Lots of strangers in public told us that their babies/nieces/nephews also wore helmets and offered support.

The insurance covered the helmet at 100% with a prescription from the doctor (proof of medical necessity).  Good luck to you!

  • Nathan has been wearing his helmet for almost 4 weeks and is doing great. He has torticollis which lead to the plagiocephaly. His was mild and should only need the helmet for 6-8 weeks.

    Good luck!
