Wooden playset vs plastic playsets

Eli's bday is coming up and I was wanting to get him a nice, wooden playset for the back yard. But man, they are pricey! I have been watching CL like a hawk for a good used one, but no luck so far. So, I've resolved to the idea of possibly getting a plastic Little Tikes or Step 2 slide/climber type playset. Do you like yours? Do you keep it indoors or out? For those who have the wooden playgrounds, do you find your kids use them? Are they worth the $? Or are they like everything else...once the new wears off, they're bored with it. Thoughts?

Re: Wooden playset vs plastic playsets

  • At our old house, we had a plastic play house for two weeks.  I called it the Spider Hotel.  I would not go in there and Evie picked up on my fear and didn't go in it.  It was constantly dirty and my husband was always cleaning spider out of it.   We sold it.

My friends daughter has a wooden set (for the last 3 years) and its held up well.  Its KidKraft.  The colors have faded but only one board has broken.  They keep it under the deck, so it gets some protection from the elements.   Evie plays in it and I don't think there are too many spider in it, although I've seen one, once.

The KidKraft ones usually go on sale around Xmas time at Costco.  I think our friend got hers for $300.

  • Keep checking CL.  We got ours new from an ad that PlayNation had put on there.  It was a few hundred dollars cheaper than the store price.
  • Michelle, that's great to hear about them going on sale at Christmas! I could definitely do $300! All the new ones I have seen start in the $650 range. I may wait and do it for Christmas rather than his bday. And ick about spiders! Now I'm afraid of the plastic ones, lol. Kerrin, I saw Playnation advertising on CL - their cheapest one was $599 - not bad, but I was hoping to find one for like $400 max. Did you pick it up from the warehouse in Canton? Maybe I can get the grandparents to  pitch in..... :)

  • We have a big wooden playset that I got brand-new on Craigslist (it was an overstock from Wal-Mart, brand name Blue Gorilla or something like that although the sign on the playset actually says PlayNation).  Anyway, it's been a good investment that will hold up through my children's childhoods.

Christmas is a great time to buy, the set I got was probably $700 under retail.

They probably will drop the price closer to Xmas.  We picked it up at the warehouse and put it together ourselves to save on money.
