I'm pretty sure it's an upstairs apartment with a private entrance on the ground floor.
My friends live in a garden apartment. You open their private door and walk up a flight of stairs to their apartment.
To my boys: I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
Most garden apartments in the city are ground floor, or slightly below the sidewalk. They open up to the back yard and usually that apartment has rights to the backyard.

Ground level, sometimes lower than ground level, with their own entrance.
They're often nice, but almost all of my friends who lived in garden apartments in Brooklyn brownstones had issues with flooding. They were low, so all the water gathered and leaked into their apartments. Just something to think about.
Brooklyn Represent!
Yeah, they sometimes have problems with water. Also, can be darker than apartments on higher floors, but depends on the building. I would have traded a view for some outdoor space though.

For serious.
This place definitely isn't in a city... it's in a nearby town. And from all of the pictures, it has really nice views, so it can't be underground. That's why I was really confused lol
We're in a garden level condo. We love it. Our upstairs is sidewalk level and our downstairs is below grade. We haven't had any issues with flooding (knock on wood). We don't have a view, but we still get lots of light, plus we have two private entrances and a fantastic patio.
We've pretty much sworn to only by garden level places. Especially after watching friends carry their strollers up the stairs of townhouses.
In my old hometown, they were single-story apartments, sort of like townhouses, but each had their own little plot of space behind and really nicely landscaped and maintained general use courtyards. The individual plots were intended for small personal gardens. I'm not claiming that's typical - just what they built right behind my dad's house.

We live in a "Garden apartment". It's the first floor of the building but slightly under ground, so our windows are up high on our walls and are at ground level. It's kind of dark during the day but it's fabulous for keeping cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
