Another daycare question - waitlists

Okay hopefully the last daycare question for awhile!
We went and looked at several daycares in the area (north-central), and got added to the waitlists.  One of the places had immediate openings - but they put us on the waitlist until closer to the due date.

Almost all of them told us that they'd be in touch with us after the baby is born, about 4-6 wks before we want to start childcare.  Is that the normal protocol?  Should I be worried that we won't have a spot, and to keep looking?  Of our top 3 choices, the waitlists were about 1-4 infants.

Re: Another daycare question - waitlists

  • the places we were on the waitlist for (and still are, 9 months later) told us to call once the baby was born and let them know we're still interested.  they're both really small centers though (one has 2 infant rooms and the other just 1), so there's not much turnover and priority goes to parents with older kids already there.

if you're on 3 lists and one of them has current availability, I'd probably feel pretty confident in that and just relax for a while.  Then, once LO is born, I'd call and let them know and tell them that you're very interested in your spot there, get an update on your position, etc.

  • Yeah, there is another place very close to us that we liked, but their waitlist was ridiculous.  I'm guessing we'll still be on the waitlist there well after I go back to work.  Do people put their names on the waitlist before kids are born, or what?!?

Do you know by chance - if you're at the top of the waitlist, and a family comes in that belongs to that church, etc - do you get bumped down?  I forgot to ask that when I was shopping around.

    Yep.

I don't know.  You have to check the policy at that specific center. Some centers have a priorities list.  At one that I would LOVE to get my kids in (but never will) tiers it like this:

    1. Members w/ kids already in the program.

    2. Non-members w/ kids already in the program.

    3. Members w/o kids yet in the program.

    4. General public.

We sit in Tier 3. There is never a spot available and Ben has been on the list since I was pregnant with him. Obviously we don't need it now, but it was just an example.

  • Wow - I guess I had better put kid #2 on the list, lol.  Thankfully I think only one of our main lists actually have a priority like that - but we're like you, in a #3 of 4 tier. . . so it sounds like that might not be promising.
