Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I need ideas (toddler food related)

I feel like we are in a food rut.

Can you please respond with your child's favorite foods?

Anything with iron would be a huge plus because Abby was slightly anemic at her one-year appointment and we're struggling to find foods with iron that she'll eat.

TIA :)

    Big Smile  You're welcome.

You could try Scout's crescent roll things with chicken and spinach in it since spinach has iron.

  • Does she like oatmeal or rice cereal still? My kid's iron was low too, and those were what I found to have the most iron content that he would eat. I would mix in some blueberries or other fruits, strawberries, bananas, etc and he would eat a lot of it for breakfast or even with dinner. Did they tell you to give her any supplements? We had to give him half of a Flinstone complete vitamin once a day...he constipated him like no other so we went to half every few days. His iron was fine at his 18 month appt. You can always give her a vitamin if you are concerned.

  • I second the spinach nomination. You can easily hide it in sauces or scrambled eggs. Lean red meats have iron too, and DD loves beef. What about broccoli or asparagus? Iron-fortified cereal or pasta?

Some of DD's favourites are grilled cheese, pasta, quesadillas, bagel and cream cheese, pita and dip, and tuna

I have been mixing unsweetened applesauce and oatmeal and she gobbles that up. I'm getting to the point where I always give it to her if she refuses to eat the meat I have at the meal.

Yes! Chicken, spinach and cream cheese (I think that was what we used) crescent rolls were a big hit at the JKat household!

  • I sneak spinach into homemade mac and cheese, grilled cheese, pizza, etc. Morgan likes all of those foods and it's easy to hide veggies in them.

She also loves PB&J sandwiches. Does peanut butter have iron? I feel like it should.

  • Macaroni and cheese and whatever vegetables I have handy. If I mix in the veggies with the mac n' cheese, she'll eat it all up.

Peanut butter does! We got the go-ahead to give it to her but I think she's weirded out by the consistency when she tries to pick it up.

  • Is my kid the only freak who likes his veggies more than anything else? I feel like I need a thread for how to sneak protein into his diet, because he will take veggies over anything else.

I might need to try this. And I might need to cave and try peanut butter. He's seriously in a veggie mood the past 2 months. He will sit and eat all his veggies and leave everything else. Even the cheese. Freak...

  • Most meats have some iron, right? DD LOVES mexican. Enchiladas, taco salad with pinto or kidney beans, etc...

  • DS loves lasagne so I make it with heaps of veggies, use wholemeal pasta sheets and some cheese in the the roux. Last time I even put a whole layer of silverbeet and DS devoured it.

  • I put spinach in a lot of things - meatballs, lasagna, shredded chicken. A big hit today was a spinach, ham and cheese fritata. Costco also had some spinach nuggets that she will eat.

Do you supplement? We have a poly-vi-sol with iron (don't know what it is called right now) or I try and give fruit and baby oatmeal. T has become randomly picky so if all else fails, pb on toast.

No, my child is like this as well.

With the exception of cheese. She has a love affair with cheese.

  • Our LO's new foods this week are vanilla YoBaby yogurt (she LOVES it), meatballs from Trader Joe's, & shredded chicken from the burritos at Chipotle!

Me: 42, DH: 43. We are so grateful to have a 2yr old daughter, conceived naturally after 3 miscarriages & no treatments (our Dr. gave us 1 more month to try on our own before advacing to IVF, & we conceived her naturally in January 2010)! Trying since April 2011 without sucess....MD said we were both "fine" & that if it wasn't happening, it was a chromosomal issue. Finally started Follistim 225mcg injections with an Ovidrel trigger November 2012. Bleeding 11 days post Ovidrel on November 25th. Starting the whole lab/Ultrasound/Follistim cycle again on November 27th...

  • We make fruit & spinach smoothies almost every day - my daughter LOVES them

    https://wegotfed.com/2011/05/spinach-and-fruit-smoothie/

Normally, we use full fat greek yogurt, so there's some protein in there too - in addition to what's in the ground flaxseed we add.

She's also a HUGE fan of basically any kind of chili, as long as it isn't too spicy.

  • We still give LO oatmeal cereal for iron!  I mix it with natural applesauce and cinnamon.
