A little back story--My grandfather had a heart attack when I was 19, survived mouth cancer when I was 22 and then went on to beat bladder cancer and prostate cancer 2 years ago (I was 28).
Last week he found out that the lining of his colon was thicker than they liked and he set up a colonoscopy appt for next week. Yesterday he told my mom that he was having some stomach pain and was constipated. He and my parents agreed that if things weren't better today he would go see the Dr.
He called my mom this morning while she was at work, he was vomiting blood and needed to go to the ER. She rushed him there and now they've decided that they need to care flight him to a larger hospital (still debating which one) at least an hour away, he has peritonitis and needs surgery--which is risky because his organs have shifted due to him losing his bladder and prostate--and, just as an added cherry on top, his kidneys are now failing as a result of the bladder cancer and the constant UTIs that he gets.
Oh, and we live 12 hours from him and my parents, I'm scheduled for c/s on Nov 15th and have been consistent contractions for about 24 hours (20 minutes apart).
I can't do this right now. Now I sit and wait for news, which I then have to pass on to other family members because my mom's cell phone is about to die and my Dad can't get off work (although, right now, 2 of the hospitals they are debating are closer to him, so they are just letting Dad sit tight until they know where they are sending Grandpa).
And the worst part is, my 13 year old niece has been asking if something was really wrong for about 5 days. Intuition can bite at times.
Re: And the hits keep coming....
Thanks ladies.
The surgeons decided that he couldn't wait any longer and are doing the surgery at the local hospital. My mom said they were very negative about his prognosis, at best he'll have a colostomy bag for the rest of his life, but they made my mother review and agree to his living will. My dad is on his way there and my brother and niece just walked in the door. He's already in surgery.
He made it through the night. He had a diverticulitis infection that had gone undetected and it perforated his bowel causing peritonitis. They ran into complications from the his previous radiation treatments and they could not repair the perforation. My mother said that he was in tremendous pain last night and the drs are still very negative about his prognosis, but if he can survive the next 48 hours we can "make plans from there."
Thanks for the thoughts and prayers.
