Would you dye your hair?

I feel like an as$hole for even asking this.

Everything I've read says its fine during pregnancy, maybe wait until 2nd tri just to be safe (which I am in now), so I made an appointment last week to get my hair cut and colored tomorrow evening. I've been excited about it all week....until now. I'm getting all nervous.

Someone please tell me I'm being ridiculous and lots of pregnant women dye their hair every day. Right?

  • Do it! You've prob not been feeling so hot and this will be a nice pick me up!

My only suggestion is that you have your appointment first thing in the morning so that the salon air isn't filled with chemicals from perms and other colors all day.

I am pretty lucky, my 3 best girlfriends are hairdressers and they let me just buy the product and they do my hair in my house for me :)

  • I have heard getting highlights is fine... but wouldnt recommend an all over color

I cancelled my last appt from when I was about 8 weeks pregnant, but I have one this weekend that I dont want to cancel, cause I am not walking down the aisle in my wedding looking like trailer trash with my highlights grown out as far as they are... lol.

  • I would consider getting highlights because the way they do them keeps the dye away from your scalp.

As far as a full color, I would probably hold off, but that is because of my loss history, I couldn't handle something bad happening and having something I could foolishly blame myself for (even though the hair dyeing could be 100% safe).

  • I dyed my hair at 8w and I'm not concerned. I'm about to have it touched up again.

They don't tell pregnant hair colorists and stylists to not work during pregnancy and they breathe the fumes in far more than a client would. Also, any possible  amount of dye/peroxide/ammonia absorbed into your scalp is so low that the chances of it crossing the placenta are so small. Go ahead and get gorgeous and don't worry!

  • I am going Friday.  I asked my doctor and she said absolutely it is fine!  :)   I also waited until 2nd tri.

  • I plan on getting mine done in a few weeks.. Every dr and hairdresser I've spoken to tells me it's fine though it's best to wait til after 14 weeks when the major organs have developed.

  • I can't wait to do this but OB told me to wait for highlights until 16 weeks when the baby's organs aren't developing as much. To be honest, I still feel paranoid doing it at 16+ weeks but I know a friend dyed her hair all throughout her pregnancy.

  • Yes you can certainly dye your hair.  Did it all the way through with 1st baby and will do so with this pregnancy.  My Dr said there is nothing wrong with it plus it makes you feel better.  ENJOY!!

  • I did last with my last pg and will do it with this one. In moderation it is okay. Plus, if it's highlights then it's not as big an issue because the dye isn't resting on your scalp.

  • I dyed my hair during 1st tri with DD, and during 1st tri with this pregnancy.  It's very unlikely that any significant amount of hair color would actually get to your LO.

I wouldn't do it every single day, but I did it about 4 time while pregnant with DD.  She's fine.

  • I colored my hair when I was about 8 weeks pregnant and my baby is still alive and kicking!  Those are old wives tales...

  • i dyed my hair straight through my last pregnancy and just dyed mine for the first time with this pregnancy. i waited til i was 12 weeks because the hormones will almost repel the hair dye sometimes before that supposedly.

  • I had mine done last week! And it looks great ;)
  • im sitting under the lamps right now, go for it.
  • I didn't do it with my DD only bc I was paranoid and ob said not to. That was 5 years ago. My new ob said go for it but beware that the usual recipe might not go to the usual color bc of hormones. I had mine done at 6wk, 10 wks and will go again this Saturday. I have natural brown hair that is colored/highlighted to a very blonde so my roots are outrageous now. About to get lowlights put back in so I can go longer then 4 weeks.

    Have fun and enjoy it!!!

  • I was told it was fine.

  • I colored my hair all during my 1st pregnancy- and it was all over color, I don't have highlights.  The hairdresser said it was fine, there were even pregnant hairdressers working there.  I have read many articles stating that the dye does not stay on long enough to penetrate your skin and get into your bloodstream to harm the baby.  I think it's an outdated piece of advice.  If doctors say it's ok, and hairdressers not only say it's ok but work through their pregnancy- I wouldn't worry about it.
  • I dyed my in October. I talked it over with my stylist and she assured me they use low-ammonia dyes and that a lot of people do it. I actually wasn't worried about it at all, I just think it's one of those things people have blown out of proportion personally. I honestly couldn't even smell anything the whole time I was there! Go for it :)
