Read Anything Good Lately (Not PG Related)?

I was just thinking that I should swing by the bookstore tonight to pick up something new to read. I have noticed that the wait at my OB/GYN can be fairly long...so I want to go armed with a good book to read to help pass the time. Mind you, I totally don't care that my doctor runs behind, because I want her to spend quality time with her patients and not churn them out like a factory...so this is not a complaint AT ALL...I just know I will likely be spending a good deal of time waiting (whether it's in the waiting room or for the doc herself)...so I thought I'd check in to see what's on your nightstands these days.

(Does not need to be PG related...just a good book I can sink my teeth into...)

Re: Read Anything Good Lately (Not PG Related)?

  • Depending what type of genre you are into, I have tons of suggestions!

The Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris is pretty good - hilarious and verrrry addicting!

If you like historical fiction, pick up *anything* by Phillipa Gregory. She is the author of The Other Boelyn Girl, but she writes so much more and it is all very good.

I am currently reading the Percy Jackson series, by Rick Riordan. It's for kiddos, but the books are quick read and are really super funny!

  • Thanks! I am really not particular to a genre - I just like a good book that draws me in and keeps the pages turning. :) That said, the only thing that really doesn't get me going are the murder/mystery books. Other than that - anything is fair game. :) I'll look into your suggestions!!
  • The Hunger Games... its the first of a trilogy & is also being made into a movie.  I can't put it down!

  • Oh, ditto on Phillippa Gregory.  She is one of my favorites.  A little lighter is Lauren Willig and the Pink Carnation Series (I think there are 5 or 6 books now).  Also historical fiction, but fabulous!
  • OH and the Sweep series by Cate Tiernan. It is being made into a movie (FINALLY). It is about a girl who finds out she is from an ancient bloodline of witches. Much better than Twilight, and it came out way before hand.

She also wrote a series called 'Balefire' that was pretty cool!

  • I agree about The Hunger Games (currently reading it for the second time!) and anything by Philippa Gregory. Also I tend to love anything by Emily Giffin, especially Something Borrowed. It's a fun, easy read.

I love Emily Giffin, perfect for when you just need something light and fun to read.

  • I also love Phillipa Gregory.  I am currently reading her book, The White Queen.  I'm about halfway through it and loving it so far.
  • If you like non-fiction, BossyPants (Tina Fey) was hilarious.

I agree with hunger games - couldn't put them down.

  • My favorite book that I have read so far this year was Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran.  I'm in the middle of The Game of Thrones series right now and I'm really enjoying them.  They are really long, so they are a bit of a commitment.

I agree with the Hunger Games -love.  Another good YA series that I loved (and that are a little lighter) are The City of Bones books by Cassandra Clare.

  • A real page turner was the book my book club just finished reading The Kitchen House.  There's a couple of graphic scenes in it (sexual violence) and death so not sure if you want to read it but seriously couldn't put it down.
  • I seem to have similar tastes as AshleyK1015, and also liked Charlaine Harris and Rick Riordan (I'll be checking out Phillipa Gregory soon!).  I also absolutely love the Dresden files by Jim Butcher.  He's got a great, kind of sarcastic sense of humor that had me laughing out loud through a lot of his books.

  • Oh, I loved the Hunger Games series too!

Also, loved "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett and "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen.

Wife to an amazing man and mom to three darling girls!
  • 2 of my favorites are Ken Follett's "Pillars of the Earth" and "World without end". Completely epic, with so many wonderful characters that I would read well fast when I was tired, just so I could read more.

This!! I read the whole series in 4 days, they were so darn great! Check them out.
  • Did you watch the Pillars of the Earth6 part  series? Ken Follett is my husband's favorite author! The first episode was great - we ordered it on Netflix.

    Here's another! Christopher Paolini's Eragon series :o)

  • Just realized the other day that I am somehow reading four books at the same time! The fourth Sookie Stackhouse book, the lastest Rick Riordan (Spin off of the Percy Jackson series), The Mother of all Pregnancy Books and a graphic novel the hubby picked up for me from Comic Con called Alice's Tales.  If you are looking for a good website for book suggestions check out Goodreads.com.

  • You asked the right question. I love to read. Just finished a book called Rain Song. It was pretty good.

  • I am a fan also of Phillipa Gregory.  I like Nicholas Sparks too.  There easy reads and I have never been to New England and love the imagery I get from reading his novels.  The Help was a great book, I couldn't put it down.  Has anyone read James Patterson?
