s/o organic or non organic milk

This is not another debate. I really don't care what kind of milk you use nor do I feel bad about not using organic.

CG just reminded me that I wanted to ask this.  Many who said you only buy organic said it was due to the added hormones.  I've never seen milk which didn't say no artificial growth hormones.  Even the gallon I bought at Walmart for 2.47 yesterday says it.  Do you not believe the companies?  This isn't meant to be snarky at all.

ETA: this isn't to anyone who uses organic for any other reasons.  I am just curious about the artificial growth hormone bit.

Re: s/o organic or non organic milk

  • I'm going to stick with the theory that they can't write it down if its not true. If they got caught the shiit storm that would ensue just wouldn't be worth it.

As for organic milk, I only buy the Horizon organic chocolate milk sometimes as a treat because its so. darn. tasty.

  • We buy organic milk, eggs and meat (all from local sources) because the way animals are treated in conventional farming is terrible.

Even if the dairy cows aren't being injected with hormones, they're being fed diets that may be full of pesticides, chemicals, etc.  If I can reduce the risk of my kid consuming that stuff, I will.

  • Organic milk isn't organic just because of the lack of hormones but also because the the cows are fed an organic diet, free of pesticides, etc. Also, there really isn't  a way to test for the artificial hormone (to my understanding) so it's essentially based on an honesty policy/signed waivers from the farmers.

  • Our Grocery store has 3 kinds:

     organic

non organic labeled "no growth hormones"

Non organic, no label saying no hormones (with Hormones i guess).

I know that!  This is why my question was specifically to those who said they buy it due to the hormones. There were lots who used that as a reason.  I buy many organic products, produce and meats. I am very familiar with organic.

  • Non-organic milk causes cholera.

  • We drink milk from Kwik Trip (midwest convenience store), because it's cheap.  I grew up on a dairy farm and feel completely safe drinking non-organic milk.  BST (the hormone many fear) is present in ALL milk (organic, non-organic,no-added-hormone milk) because it occurs naturally in the cow.
  • I do believe most of the claims. It makes me feel better if I know the dairies are here locally. Because then if I really wanted to, I could get in my car, drive over there and check it all out. ;)

But seriously, I like the organic because I can get the DHA additive. Not that we do that every time.

Walmart.  It was my very first time buying it at Walmart.  So far, so good.  No one has died and neither have boobies yet.

Yes, there are naturally occuring hormones present in the milk. The hormones people are most concerned about is the artificial rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone). rBGH is injected to amp up milk production in dairy cows. Cows treated with rBGH have higher IGF (insulin growth factor) in their milk. IGF has been linked to colon and breast cancer. They are still studying this link.

  • even if the milk doesn't have the added hormones, god knows WHAT kind of steroids they're giving to the cows that they don't have to disclose.

i'd rather not have my dd start puberty at 8, so i gladly hopped on the organic milk wagon. when i was a kid some 25+ years ago, the hormones and steroids in milk were minimal compared to what they are now so this wasn't an issue my mom had to deal with.

On the non-organic milk I buy, it's the rBGH which dairy farmers pledge are not added to their cows.  This is what my question was.  Do those who buy organic due to this reason alone not trust the farmers pledge?

I can't tell you since lack of extra hormones isn't the only reason I buy organic. :)

  • Cows aren't meant to produce milk for as long as they do...  it's unnatural.  Furthermore, cows are meant to produce milk for their offspring, not ours.

  • there are lots of mixed reveiws on the milk debate.  the only organic milk they offered at the grocery store where we shop was horizon and i read they cannot (or choose not, i forget) to supply data proving they are 100% organic.  then it went on to state that most organic milks are not providing proof other than saying they don't use added artificial hormones, which most dairy farmers pledge on all milks.  we were buying horizon at twice the price until i researched that.  now its plain old milk.  in our area right now, safeway has "just 4 u" savings and they were selling milk at $1.77 a gallon (normally over $3) through next week.  too bad i couldn't stockpile.
  • that isn't the only reason we only eat organic but no I wouldn't 100% believe all companies that say that anyone can say that doesn't mean by law it has to be true
  • Our organic milk is $6.38 here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Walmart brand organic is 5.38. SO expensive!

there have been double to triple amounts of the artifical hormones in the last 10-20 years, so that is why our generation doesn't see the effect but you are now getting girls as young as 8 developing and getting their periods. The largest shock was when I went to 7th grade orientation to my stepsons school (this was 7 years ago now) and the old 7th graders (going to be 8th graders) guided us around the school, girls fully developed out to HERE and every single on of them looked like they were sophmores in high school! I was beyond shocked and that is when i started looking more into natural and organic ways of life.

  • I think buying organic is a good option if you have it but the no added growth hormones is a little vague. I think it's something that can be put on anything so I don't put too much stock in it unless I do the research. From what I've learned, drinking milk from grass fed cows, whether organic or not is the best. And whole milk is better too, not just for our kiddos.

This website has some good info on organic brands...
