Food Dilemma

DD is almost 22 months old and she never wants to eat.  She'll eat like 2-3 bites even of food she really likes, and that's it. I try lots of old and new foods and it's all the same thing.  Anyone else like this?  I try not to feed her junk, but some days all she wants is pretzels and cheese (cubes, cottage, etc.......not whiz, lol).

Re: Food Dilemma

  • Also any healthy recipes welcomed.  DD loves hummus so I make that a lot, but other ideas appreciated.

  • DS doesn't often try new foods, which is frustrating, but he's a good eater for what he likes--most of the time.

I think if she is thriving, growing and generally healthy, then you shouldn't sweat it too much. Pretzels aren't awful and cheese is a good source of protein.

Talk to your pedi as well. Maybe he/she has something to suggest.

  • YES!

Charlie is a horrible eater.  Always has been.  In fact, just last week the pedi put him on a nightly Pediasure milkshake as a way to fatten him up.  He's now in the 3-10th percentile.

Today's intake, so far, is a few bites of waffle, a few ounces of milk, a handful of cheerios, a slice of processed cheese and a handful of oyster crackers.  Oh, and a yogurt sipper and a veggie sipper.  Which are essentially baby food, but the pedi says, if he eats it, fine.

I've got no suggestions for you!

  • Our daughter is a very particular eater. She refuses any vegetables, pasta, rice, some fruits, beans, meat... Some days, she gets by on toast, cheese and frozen blueberries (she doesn't like them fresh).

I had a lengthy chat with her doctor at the two-year checkup about this. Basically, the doctor says not to get too stressed about getting her to eat new things (because then she will get stressed out and refuse everything!) and just keep on trying. She can get all the protein she needs from milk and cheese (this really surprised me!). And, she can go to bed hungry occasionally (easier said than done, when you have a whiny toddler at the table).

So, I try to give her lots of healthy snacks* (yep, including pretzels) and she seems to be doing ok. It's very boring for me, because I would like her to eat all of the delicious things that I make for our dinner. Her dad is a fussy eater too - I think they're both super-tasters (he thinks ketchup is tooooo sweet) and I'm not going to change that!

Good luck, and I totally empathise with your frustration!

*I'm trying to avoid giving her too many snacks right before dinner so that she will be hungry at dinner time and more likely to eat what's in front of her.

  • I'm not all that worried, but DH is panicking over too much salt on the pretzels (they're the ones with Orville Redenbacher oil, garlic, dill, etc....she LOVES THEM). I'm just like "eh, she had green beans too, it all evens out".

  • I am really no help here.  Michael is (most of the time) a really good eater.  I have found that he wants to eat whatever we are eating and it is more interesting if he can take it off our plates.  Last night I made Manwich and lima beans (I know you envy my gourmet skills) and he shoveled in the lima beans.  He was not really interested in the sandwich though.

  • If she's doing well I wouldn't sweat it, but maybe try to get her to drink a fruit and veg smoothie with yogurt. Maybe try lentils or chick peas(hummus has them) as they're great for protein.

This seriously made me laugh out loud.  Thanks everyone, for cheering me up, sounds like a lot of kids at the same age are the same way, guess we'll stick with the cottage cheese and hummus routine.  Stick out tongue
