Helping DD tell us she needs to go...before she goes

A couple of weeks ago, DD started to really show some interest in going on the potty.  So right away, we got Pull Ups, started a sticker chart, have been talking about it with her, etc.  She does go in the potty daily, but not every time she goes.  It seems she goes on the potty really randomly, and in her diaper at other times.

I'm not sure how to transition, so that she knows she's supposed to tell us she has to go before she goes, and then we can sit on the potty to transition to full time PT'd.  Because of how sporatic she has been with it, I'm hesitant to try underwear just yet.

Advice?  I'm not really sure what to do next?

  • That's how DD was, until it just clicked one day. She now tells us she has to go, but she doesn't go on her own...so I'm not sure when that step will happen. I still ask her constantly if she has to go, just as a reminder when she's playing and such. Just keep working with her. We don't do underwear at the house yet, she's in pull-ups, however at DC, they put her in panties all day.

  • you can try putting her on the potty at the same times every day - when she wakes up, before nap, before lunch, etc. and then also remind her to tell you, but don't tell her.  Just say "don't forget to tell me if you need to go potty" whenever its been an hour or so.  And, I would talk about how you and Daddy feel the urge to pee sometimes too and ask her if she ever feels her pee coming, etc.  DD sometimes yells at her crotch "don't come out yet pee pees!"  LOL

  • I don't know if it helped or she just needed time, but... with DD#1 we used to read "Princess and the pottpy" and lines from that "Hear ye hear ye, I have to pee pee" and "Yoohooyoohoo I need to poopoo!"

DH and I madde a big  todo over announcing it for ourselves.  Finally she started but it took a few days.  Our approach had always been not telling her to go.  Same with DD#2 but she was different.  She peed her pants- no success at ALL for 3 weeks and then one day she started announcing that she needed to go and has had like 2 accidents since the first success.

They're all different, but I think, even if it means more accidents, you'll have more success if she stops relying on you completely to read her body's cues.

  • Like pps said 1 day it just clicks.  It took ds a little while but now at home he will just get up and go by himself.  I did annouce myself when I had to go for awhile and that seemed to help.

  • Rather than asking if she had to go, I'd just ask if she had tinkle/poo poo in her bottom. It sounds silly, but it seemed to connect the fact that she'd recognize it was in there before she went. Poop took a bit longer, but when it clicked, it clicked. One day she stopped and yelled "I have poopoo in my bottom!" and we ran to the toilet. No poop accidents since.

  • Patience!  She will totally get it, just stick with whatever you're doing. Maybe flip through a potty training book or two from the library to make sure you've covered the fundamentals. I'm sure whatever you're doing will work if you stick with it.
