Advice: Low thyroid levels?

I've just received a call from my OB letting me know my bloodwork came back indicating I have low thyroid levels (or hypothyroidism). She is referring me to an endocrinologist, which I'll be able to see tomorrow at at 7:45 in the morning. I'm freaked out because online research is indicating low thyroid levels could cause mental retardation and developmental delays. Is anyone familiar with this or has had it happen in their pregnancy? Input appreciated!

Re: Advice: Low thyroid levels?

  • My hypothyroidism was diagnosed about a year after DD was born.  I had a take a radioactive pill and have scans to confirm everything and then I started on Synthroid.  I've been on the same dosage of Synthroid for over a year, and my OB is testing it every 8 weeks with this pregnancy.  As long as you get treatment for the hypothyroidism (which is usually done with Synthroid), then I think the prognosis is good.  Good luck at your appt, but definitely expect blood work.

  • I have congenital hypothyroidism and it did not cause any problems during my first pregnancy. I have been on Synthroid for my entire life and they just raised the dosage while I was pregnant and monitored me a little more closely. As long as you are seen by an endocrinologist you and your baby should be fine! They will probably put you on Synthroid to keep your levels under control (which is completely safe to take during pregnancy) It's my understanding that hypothyroidism only causes mental retardation when it is left untreated.

  • I also have Hypothyrodism.  I take 200 mcg of synthroid for this.  Because of this I had a very small baby but; he was healthy.  As long as your dr keeps this monitored it should not be a problem.  I have my bloodwork checked every 3 weeks and medication adjustied accordingly.  Try not to worry about it.  Like others have posted most severe results are due to lack of precautions.
