Natural Birth

Suggestions for information...

I can't find any natural birthing classes in my area. There's the standard childbirth classes at the hospital, but beyond that, I'm not finding any lamaze or bradley (my preferred method based on my research thus far).

My insurance will not cover a Midwife, let alone a Doula, and we can't afford it out of pocket, so it's just me, my will and my doctor to do this without any major interventions.

Any recommendations for books, dvds, etc to help me prepare?

Re: Suggestions for information...

  • Have you considered Hypnobirthing?  This is what we did and I had a great experience with it.  You could either look for a class or Hypnobabies is a home-study course that is similar from what I understand.  I know a lot of girls on here speak highly of Hypnobabies.

As far as a doula, you could always look for a student doula.  This would be someone who needs the experience, but does not charge for their services since they are not yet certified.

As far as books go 'Ina May's Guide to Childbirth' is an amazing book.  The first part is inspirational stories and the second part is the more medical side of labor.  I also read, "Hypnobirthing the Mongan Method".  You might be able to find both at the library.  Other than this just keep doing what you are doing, asking questions, reading, etc. HTH!

  • I liked the book "The Birthing Partner". It was good for me, and it would have been good for DH (we ended up hiring a doula because I knew he wouldn't prepare properly to know how to help me).

    There are also Bradley books.

I delivered with a doctor, in a hospital, and had a great natural birth. Talk to your doctor early to see how they feel about natural birth. If they're not a fan, find a new (covered by insurance) care provider.

Check out the FAQ in my siggy, too. Smile

  • I agree with the suggestion of using a student doula. We did this and she was great!

  • The book I read was "Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way."
