Re: Baby Monitors?

  • We have a Summer Infant video monitor. I love it, it has saved us many trips to the baby's room, especially when he cries for 1 minute then is back to sleep. We can see that he is fine without going in.

We have the same one and love it.  It gives me peace of mind to be able to see him and hear him.

This exactly!  I love being able to see if I need to go in the room or not.  A friend of mine uses this as well and he was able to see his daughter's coughing, turned out to be vomiting.  He ran right in and went from there.

  • We also got a Summer Infant video monitar.  Haven't used it with baby yet since LO isn't here but we did play with it for a couple days after getting it to make sure we liked it.  Works great!

  • I think I'm the only person in the universe who has had a problem with the Summer video monitor.  The sound cuts in and out on ours.  Mostly out these days.

They offered to replace it, but I have to send ours back first.  I feel like I'm addicted to it at this point and don't want to go without it for the time it'd take to send it back!

  • I'm different from most - I wasn't as worried about seeing him as I was about just knowing that he was still breathing, so we have the Angelcare monitors.  He was in our room until he was ~4 months old, and for the week or two between us putting him in his crib and when we bought the Angelcare, I was up constantly at night.  With that monitor, I slept through the night knowing it would alert me if anything happened, which was all I was paranoid about.  We love it enough that we plan to keep using it as a movement sensor once he's switched to a real bed b/c he'll wake up in the mornings and not make noise, cry, etc. - just read books in his crib - and we can totally see him sneaking out of his bed w/o us knowing, which neither of us are comfortable with, no matter how well we've child-proofed his room!  I've never felt that it was necessary to see him while he's in his crib, but he's also an excellent sleeper so the occasions that would arise where we'd need to see him are few and far between.

We actually just bought another Angelcare monitor for Thing 2 last month b/c we love it that month - never considered another one for a moment.

  • Like PastorsWife, I didn't care as much about seeing the baby as I wanted to make sure she was breathing. Originally I registered for an AngelCare monitor but ended up returning it based on reviews I read online about the false alarms and also because DD is in our room and probably will be for a while and I could only use the AC in her crib.

Currently we have a Snuza Go! and a Sony Babycall monitor. The Snuza clips to her diaper and will alert you if she has stopped breathing or it becomes to slow/shallow. You can have it set so it alerts you at 15, 18, or 20 seconds of no movement and the slow/shallow breathing will alert you if less than 8 movements in a minute are detected. You have the option of turning off that setting but we leave it on.

The alarm on the Snuza is pretty loud but coupled with the Sony monitor we are able to hear it anywhere in the house. The Sony monitor was relatively inexpensive and is pretty sensitive. Depending on how high we have it turned up we can hear her breathing on it.

  • We also have the summer infant video monitor. I love having video and the sound is amazing. We can hear DD breathe on it, if you turn it up high enough. It also has a great range. Please don't flame, but we hang out with our neighbors occasionally and its works great inside their house. It also extends to the end of our driveway where our mailbox is.

  • Nezwee...we've done that once before too :)  I took a monitor and hung one out my window to be sure I could hear her.  We are in townhouses but still.  Once she's down though, she's typically down.

I have the Sony one that I believe Camden mentioned.  It's worked fine for our need.  Honestly, it's gotten very little use anyway.  She has co-slept on and off.

  • We have the Sony Baby Call monitor, the one with 2 receivers. I'm fine with just audio and this one is great. I can hear him breathing on it.

  • We have a cheapie regular one- the video monitors fairly new and $$$ when I was pregnant w/ DD. We hardly used the monitor we do have because our room is right next to the nursery and our house has thin walls.

I think that the video monitors are useful for a longer period of time, as you can use them to watch a toddler nap, know if he or she is awake or asleep, etc. DS is a pretty light sleeper and if it's the tail end of his nap and you open the door to check on him he will wake up.

  • LOL, we have three monitors...

We bought a Summer Infant video monitor while I was pregnant and set it up for the crib in her room. That works ok, I do have some problems w/ the screen/sound cutting out every once in awhile. But the first two months she ended up sleeping in our room and since everything was set up in DD's room, we bought a cheapie SonyCall sound monitor. That has worked just fine as well....then, I should have known how paranoid I'd be about her breathing when she moved into her room...I should have just gotten the Angel Care monitor from the beginning and skipped the video one. We ended up buying the movement monitor because it's the only way I can sleep at night. That has worked great as well.

  • We have a sony one that is just audio.  DS was in our room for the first 3 months and by the time we moved him into his crib, I wasn't worried about his breathing.  He was in the crib, in a sleep sack, with no bumpers or other items, so I was pretty sure he was ok.  Just the audio one we have has worked great, we still use it because we shut DS door and our door at night so it would be pretty hard to hear him without it.

  • We have just a regular monitor but only use it when we're on vacation or hanging out outside (backyard) and she's sleeping inside. Our house is too small to really need it.

I do think I'd like a video monitor for the next baby, that might be a "splurge" item. Just because there are many times where I'd like to see her, but if I open her door the creeks and the light wake her.

  • We started with an Angelcare that I loved, but started giving false alarms once she was more mobile around 9 months. I turned off the movement sensor and was using it for voice only until we got a scare one night. I wasn't swaddling her, but let her sleep with an A&A swaddle blanket. She got tangled in it and it was over her head. Luckily I had snuck in to grab laundry and saw her. She was breathing pretty shallow. I dont even like to think of what could have happened if I hadn't gone in. The next day we ordered a Mororola video monitor. I LOVE it. My favorite part is her funny sleep positions. We plan to use both with the next baby and just get another video camera.

Us too. I did not see the need for a video or Angelcare monitor.

Me three. We don't even use it overnight anymore, but I will turn it on in the morning on the weekends when I can sleep in and there's a chance she'll be up before me (although this rarely happens).

My SIL said that they found themselves just staring at the monitor and not being able to go to sleep because they were too enthralled with the baby. As enthralled as I am with my child, I know that I do need my sleep. And the Sony Babycall is a great monitor, like the PPs said, I can hear her breathing.

  • The newest version of the Angelcare monitor has video. I dont know where you're registered or if all the stores have it, but it's definitely an option.

  • Originally we had an audio only monitor, but something was making it cause feedback.  We ended up taking that one to MILs house and we ended up getting the Summer video monitor instead because it runs on a different frequency.  So while I wasn't initially interested in the video monitor, once I had one I feel in love with it.

Most of the people I know who have the angel care monitor had a preemie/nicu baby.  If I had knon about them when I brought DD home from the NICU I probably would have gotten one.  But, by the time I found out about it we were already comfortable with the set up we had.

Second this!!! We have the new AngelCare with the video monitor... we don't use the sensor pad anymore since LO rolls everywhere now in his crib... but, it was a lifesaver to me the first 4 months and totally worth the money for my peace of mind. Even though he was sleeping next to me, I loved knowing that I could depend on the alarm if something happened, and I was able to get some sleep! Yes, I had a few false alarms... but its because the bassinet tilted and he rolled to the side and off. But, I would still so much rather get woken up to a couple false alarms than not getting sleep worrying about it. There is different levels of sensitivity you can use - obviously you will get more false alarms with the higher levels since it's very sensitive. Now, we just use the video monitor and I love it. It also has an intercom, so if DH or I are in there, we can talk to eachother from upstairs/downstairs LOL. Or, I can tell LO that I'm coming up, or sing to him or whatever. So happy with our purchase!

We have the new one that has the Video! LO was born in April, so we probably got it in March/April time frame. I think BRU carries them - maybe just online though. But, it has great video and great audio. Never had any issues with it - and I'm completely happy with it. When LO #2 comes along, we may just get a video monitor since that's all we use it for now for LO, and then use again in a baby room. It just gave me peace of mind whether he was next to my bed, or when we moved him into his own room - and we even took it on travels with us and used it in his Pack 'n Play!
