Toddlers: 24 Months+

I need a helpful Toddler book!

I loved "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and the "What to Expect" books. But now i need a good one for my 2 yr old! Ever since she turned 2 her behavior is nutty! Sometimes i am on eggshells cuz i don't know what will set her off next. She throws tantrums then says she hurt herself from kicking around and i try to console her and she throws another fit and doesn't want me to touch her...i am confused as to what techniques to use. I will be consistent whatever it may be but i just want some tactics to try out and see what works best for her. Ugh...i have alot of patience but this stuff is breaking me down!

I did notice a second molar coming through...so i don't know if that may be a part of it.

  • I'm in the same boat here.. we keep saying someone took our sweet DS and replaced him with a crazy boy these days! He's tantruming all the time, screaming "no!" about everything, starting to smack mommy and daddy (and furniture etc), and is just generally surly and in a "mood". It's certainly breaking me down too and making me really sad because I miss playing with him without all the breakdowns and temper. No molars coming here, although in your case, that could be a part of it.. I know teething molars can make LO's really off.  We figure for DS it's a combination of terrible 2's and him having trouble adjusting to the idea of his baby brother coming in December. We are both trying to be understanding and talk to him about it and play with him as much as possible, but it's getting tough when all we (mostly me since i'm a SAHM) get back is screaming and tantrums :-(

  • Omg! Its sooo nice to hear others talk about it too!  Thats exactly it...our sweet babies are possessed..lol. I am also a SAHM and its hard dealing with that stuff all day long. She is so wierd too cuz she is an angel in stores and restaurants and in the car. It seems to be at home where she pitches the fits...soooo frustrating.
  • A demon has posessed my child, that's the only conclusion I have come up with.  I read 123 Magic and it has been working.  Although I do still have a problem in the more public settings as far as how to discipline her.  We're getting there though.

I have friends that tell me the 3's are worse - they better be wrong!

  • I liked Dr. Sears' Discipline Book b/c it outlines what you can expect from children at their different developmental stages.

I also really enjoyed Dr. Lawrence Cohen (Kohen?)'s book Playful Parenting.  (It is geared for 3+ but I can use some of the techniques now).  Lastly, I learned a lot from Alfie Kohn's (sp?) research based book, Unconditional Parenting.
