cold

DD has had a cold for 3 weeks. I feel like she almost always has a cold. She'll finally be done with a cold, then have 1 normal week, and then it's back. I called the doctor today and I'm waiting for a call back. We've gone for sick visits for this a few times and all they say is to use a humidifier and keep her nose clear. This is also really screwing with sleep.

I'm a BFing SAHM so I feel like DD is in the group that should be least likely to get colds so often.

Do your LOs get colds this often? Do they last this long?

Re: cold

  • She had one two weeks ago and it lasted for about 10 days. Needless to say, I am still recovering from that cold that she had 3 weeks ago. Apart from that, she hasn't had any other since she was a newborn. DD got it from my Aunt's kids who got it from school. Maybe it just takes her a while to feel better? Same with me, it takes me a little while longer than DH to recover from colds and so on.

  • Has your pediatrician ruled out the possibility that it could be seasonal allergies and not a cold?

Of course, the treatment would be pretty much the same but still. 3 weeks sounds like a lot, in my Dr. Bump opinion.

  • I agree with Broc, that seems like a long time. But, I am by no means a Dr, and a new mom at that.

W has had a cold that lasted maybe a week, to a week and half.  Each day she got a little bit better. I hope your LO gets better very soon!

  • The same thing has been happening to us.  DS just got over an ear infection and now he has a new cough going on.  It has been keeping us all up at night and is very frustrating.  We took him to the Dr again yesterday, and he said this time of year is usually pretty bad.  They can just get over one thing and then catch another.  He said that February is typically bad too.  Hope your DD gets feeling better soon!

  • JT had 1 that lingered...and then an ear infection...I was annoyed because I thought that being a BFing SAHM would make him invincible (joke's on me!) I know now that we have the heat on the house gets very dry so the humidifier is on every night and JT sleeps with a crib wedge. Hope your LO gets better fast!

The main reason I don't think it's seasonal allergies is that this has been going on since she was born. I would think that maybe she was allergic to something I'm eating, but she's basically had everything that I eat and didn't react to any of it.

We spent today at home and I think she was a little better this evening. Hopefully she'll be on the mend and can keept another cold at bay. If she's not better in a few days I'm bringing her to the ped. Meanwhile, I'm in pretty bad shape from this cold too!

  • DS was sick for 5 months straight 10-15 months. We checked into everything including mold in our house (we had just moved in when it started) and there was no mold. He would get sick, get an ear infection, antibiotics, better for a day or two & get sick again. We took him to an ENT who placed ear tubes and removed his adenoids (what he believed to be the real problem) He hasn't been sick since. I think if you've been dealing with this since birth it's time for a second opinion or a referral to a specialist. You can't keep living like that and neither can your lo. it's miserable!
