Pre-School and Daycare

Preschool issues

The week before preschool started, there was an open house.  We had paperwork with all the info about the school and teacher, and the open house was an opportunity just to revisit everything and get the kids briefly introduced to the school environment.

A week later DD starts school, and 1 of the 2 teachers had changed.  I still don't even know why, and we were never given any info about the new teacher.

So then about 2 weeks ago DD comes home and she's talking about a "Mr Lou", I thought maybe he was just subbing for a day, but then Monday we met him at the halloween party.

It just kind of surprises me that 2 teachers have changed and they haven't mentioned it, and we do get a 'newsletter' every month.

Also there are probably 25-30 parents picking up the kids at once, and probably 16 parking spots.  People park all over the lawn and it's already becoming a mess, I'm just imagining when it gets to winter, we won't be able to park on the lawn because of snow.  Pickup is chaos as it is, I feel like they aren't doing anything to streamline things (like they don't divide stuff up between the 3 and 4 year old classrooms).  There is another parking lot if the kids go down the hall, I was kind of hoping they might consider that.

I just figured I should know my kid's teachers names.. would you be surprised too?

  • Honestly that would bug me.  I would speak directly with the director and find out what occurred with the two teachers and ask for a conference to meet her new teachers.  I think having a good relationship with them is very important and anytime there is a change it is important to get to know the new person and help them understand your child.  You need to also find out if the curriculum has changed!

I also would mention to the director if there are changes in the future you would love a small note in the newsletter or backpack so that you can have the opportunity to meet the newbie.

You can also mention the parking since you are there but that one is trickier.  If it has been a hot-mess for years you might have to have other parents speak up as well to make them want to change.

  • Yep, the teacher thing would bug me. In fact, it does--I recently had a similar situation happen at my DS's preschool. He has an IEP for speech and is supposed to be receiving therapy each day. The first week of school we were told that the speech teacher was new to the district and would be starting late (the following week), but then I never heard if she had started. I saw a woman once or twice whom I assumed to be the new speech teacher (DS was pretty confused with all of the new faces so I couldn't count on him for information), but was never introduced to her. Then I attended a curriculum meeting where the head teacher mentioned how they still haven't found a new speech teacher, but were working on it. I was confused about what happened to the other teacher they had just hired (Was she fired? Did she never actually start?) and annoyed that I wasn't privy to this information and that my DS wasn't receiving therapy this whole time. I never actually heard that they had hired someone, but one day several weeks later, was introduced to the new teacher during pickup. She's now been there about a month.

Anyhow, you should definitely talk to the director. It's your right to know who is teaching your LO.

  • It sounds like they could be more communicative. We've had similar issues, actually, and I've been pretty pleased that things have been handled proactively.

One of the three teachers in DD1's class left about a month & a half in -- they had a notice up on the door immediately to inform parents at pick up/drop off that Miss A had resigned and they were seeking a replacement. They had subs -- never were there less than three teachers there that I saw -- and introduced the new teacher (who was one of the subs) to us at the Halloween party last week.

We've been having parking issues as well. So they switched the parent & bus drop-off areas around, and the director emailed out a map clarifying where the drop-offs areas were, who could park in the lot, and where the other legal parking was and was not, and when the new policy would take effect.

  • Honestly, I would be shocked and appalled.  I drop off and pick up everytime, and chat with the teacher practically every day.  I would absolutely go in and talk with the teacher and/or director immediately.  Maybe I'm spoiled in having such easy access to the teacher, but it is one of the primary reasons I chose the school he is at.  And absolutely bring up your concerns with the chaos of pick-up.
