NBR: Dry Scalp/Dandruff Help

Maybe BR since everything I read says that pregnancy leads to super dry skin... I don't know.

My scalp is NASTY dry. I shampoo EOD and use dry shampoo in between... I know that the weather changes aren't helping, but what can I do?!? This is absolutely ridiculous. My stylist on Saturday said my scalp was irritated. I did just buy the scalp benefits shampoo & conditioner from Aveda, but I didn't know if there is something I can do to get QUICK results...TIA!

  • Yes. Stop shampooing your hair. M_and_m can give you the details but even EOD is too much. Your scalp is screaming for moisture and any kind of shampoo, especially dry shampoo, is only designed to pull moisture/oil from the scalp.

At night you need may need to rub oil into your scalp. I know, you can't exactly go to work with greasy nasty hair. Converting from Shampoo is a little weird in the process but trust me, a few days in a sleek ponytail is so very worth the results!!

  • Ack! Step away from the Aveda for now and lock up your dry shampoo! I'm about to pick up DD from school, but I'll come back later.

Are you talking about stopping shampooing completely?  One of my coworkers did this and I thought she was nuts... but her hair does look a lot better!  She said there was a crazy transitional period though.  I have dandruff as well and swear by head & shoulders but sometimes even that isn't doing the job.

  • I have always had a terrible itchy scalp (for me I have psoriasis) and being pregnant I'm not wanting to use much in that area and definitely nothing that's prescribed or medicated.  I did a lot of research and when I shampoo I use sea salt in the shampoo and it scrubs loose any extra flaky skin.  For the irritation/relief I know it sounds gross but the most common natural way to help with the irritation is to rinse your scalp with half Apple Cider Vinegar and half water.  I use a hair dye applicator to get it down in the scalp then I wash it out with the shampoo/sea salt solution so my hair doesn't smell.  You can also research a lot of natural oils to put on your scalp at night and some recommend mixing them with aloe.  I haven't gone shopping for the oils yet but it's on my list.
  • I had the itchiest scalp while PG, my stylist recd Burt's Bees baby shampoo of all things. Worth a shot, if it doesn't work you can always use it for the baby:)

  • Aveda KILLS my scalp. I had to stop using it because it irritated mine as well- I switched to Fekkai glossing, and that was great, but then to avoid sulfates switched to Livng Proof (no frizz), and it's been great.

I also tried loreal's sulfate free, and aveeno's shampoo in between. Loreal's also dried my scalp out, and aveeno's was ok, but I believe it has sulfates as well.

I agree with the others, don't wash your hair for a day or two. That should help.. Then switch to something else.

Mar has converted me and I don't shampoo my hair with regular shampoo anymore. I use no-poo or a conditioner to wash my scalp. I just realized that since I've started this I haven't had dry scalp and I used to have it every once in a while.

  • I concur with the first two replies.  Your scalp is mad at you about something right now.  Take a shampoo break.  Coconut Oil is a great hair rescue remedy.  You might want to do scalp treatments at the end of the day, let it sit for a couple hours and then rinse really well.  Don't use very hot water.  Use luke warm or cooler if you can bare it.  When I take a shower I turn the water cooler just to rinse and wash my hair, then I make it hot again.

Giovani Organics Is my #1 suggestion for when you start shampooing again.  That is all my hairstylist uses.  She just started selling it too.  She has trained me in the ways of hair.  Think NATURAL, things that won't irritate your scalp!  Here is a great blog post on hair for kids that works for adults too.
