Success after IF

When did you stop Met after your BFP?

My doctor told me to keep taking it, but I was just curious to see how long you stayed on it?  Also, I've heard mixed things about Met during pregnancy, one is that it could cause birth defects and one is that is is fine and can reduce the chance of miscarriage.  Any thoughts?? Thanks!

  • It does reduce the risk of miscarriage.  I stopped at 8 weeks when I ran out.  I wanted to keep taking it but my dr said I didn't need it anymore.

  • My RE told me to stop taking it at 9 weeks.  I wish I had taken it longer -- we lost a twin around that time.  I know that met most likely could not have prevented that loss, but next time I will insist on staying on it through the first tri.

  • My RE had me stop at 14 weeks.  One of my friends was kept on Met througout her entire pregnancy.  I asked my RE about that and I can't remember what she said now but I think it has something to do with whether or not you're insulin resistant.. I am not.  I've read that it reduces the chances of miscarrige to 3%.

  • there is no evidence that Met can cause birth defects and in fact there are studies done that Met can reduce  hormonal imbalances that can lead to loss. Most PCOS experts have their patients on met until the 2nd tri, except those who keep their patients on it until they deliver (it can also help prevent GD)

My RE keeps patients on it until they deliver

  • My doc felt 10 weeks was appropriate to prevent miscarriage but that studies were pointing to NOT taking it the entire pregnancy.  Therefore, at 10 weeks I stopped, and immediatly went on the GD diet and 4 times a day testing.  While I never developed full blown GD, the strict diet worked beautifully to control my blood sugars without worrying about taking metform to deal with IR.

  • My RE had me stop at 8w- but i stayed on it until 10w with my DS -- he's perfect.

I'll probably stay on it until 10w again this time- since i have enough.
