DS1 can pee on the toilet. What do I do now?

DS has recently realized he can make himself pee (on the bathroom floor). So the other day I was getting him ready for a bath again and I put him on the toilet backwards and said "go potty" and he went. It was obvious that he made it happen and he understood. Then DH and I made a big deal and congratulated him. So what now? Keep going before bath time? Try to potty train completely? I don't want a situation where he is pee trained but not poop trained. Also I'm not in a hurry to get him out of diapers for cost's sake or any other reason. I'd rather we have an easy transition. I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing. Oh and he is 25.5 months old.  Thank you

  • Yay for your DS!

Does he have a potty chair? It might be easier for him to do it himself if he has one.

I'd just keep encouraging him and don't push it. It sounds like he's getting the hang of it, and if you keep praising him he'll be more inclined to use the potty. You can poop train him when you're ready to do PTin in earnest (in my humble opinion)

  • I just put him on the potty again and told him to go pee and he did it again. So....I gave him two MnMs. He has a potty chair and the top goes on the toilet so I may do it that way because I think he likes the big toilet. I know some day I'll think this is no big deal but it's just such uncharted territory for me right now. I told him to let me know if he needs to go and I'm watching him more carefully but I don't know how the telling me he needs to go will work out.

  • This is what my son did this summer, just came home one day and wanted to go on the potty and we never turned back.  "Luckily" I had hurt my back and it was also two days before the end of summer camp, so we had several days to just hang out at home.  So the first morning we had him without underpants or anything and then just underpants and moved on from there.  DH took him to the supermarket for a very quick trip and we just gave him many opportunities to succeed.  I also printed out a free train potty chart and he had little smiley face stickers that he put on it.  The M&Ms didn't work for us since he wanted more, but we moved onto peanut M&Ms b/c they lasted longer.  :)  Then we moved onto Dum Dums and he got one for every poop.  I thought he would never stop wanting the lollipops, but eventually he stopped showing interest in the sticker chart and everything, phew!

Of course today was the first day that he had an accident at school when they were playing outside, but it took two months for that accident, so we're doing pretty good so far!

  • Perfect age to call the deal done!  Out of 6 nieces/nephews all but two were done in that 26-28mo split for daytime... Night was around 30mo.  Go for it and finish the job since you've literally got a "target rich environment" - time for pullups instead of diapers!
