Sleep regression?

I have always bragged about what a great sleeper Annabel was. She has sttn most of the time since she was about 3-4 mos old waking only once in awhile if she couldn't find her binky. The dr just told us that we should wean her from the binky before she turns one. Anyway, the past 2 nights have been impossible to get her to sleep. We usually do a bath, bottle, bedtime story, song then lay her down... No problems. Now, she cries and cries... So Ive rocked her to sleep but she will still wake 3-4 times during the night crying. Anyone else experiencing this sleep regression? Naps have been normal until this afternoon when she pulled the same shinnagans and I needed to rock her to sleep. Do we need to sleep train? If so, do we get rid of the binky now or wait?

Re: Sleep regression?

  • Oh man, that stinks! I would probably pick up a sleep training book or 2 if I were you. I don't have any experience with the binky so can't help you there.

But, have you for sure ruled out teething or illness?? I would not sleep train if either of those could be a factor.

  • I honestly don't listen to my doctor as much as you are. If I don't have anything against her using a pacifier, then I wouldn't stop using it because he told me so. I read that when babies STTN really early, like at 6 weeks, they go through sleep regression around 6 mos or something. Maybe your LO is teething or really wants her paci? Maybe you could try a different method to wean her, like wean her slowly instead of cold turkey?
  • BTW teething was terrible for my DD, she'd wake up every 2 hours or so when she was teething. Gone are those days and now she's back to STTN...sooo if it is teething, it will be over in a few weeks or so!
  • If you do decide to sleep train then I think that would be the best time to get rid of the paci cold turkey. We got rid of the bedtime bottle with DS that way and it worked great. good luck and happy sleeping to you!

  • 9 month growth spurt perhaps?

We had a similar issue two weeks ago. An extra serving of solids during the day, plus the fact LO figured out & started crawling seems to have resolved the sleep issues.

  • It seemed like when we hit the 9 month mark, everything went crazy with her sleep. She would wake up crying at midnight and also at 3. Things have since calmed down. I imagine it was a growth spurt or something. You could try sleep training, but if you LO is normally a good sleeper, maybe just wait it out?  Hang in there mama!

  • I'm going through it now. DS has never been a good sleeper, but after sleep training we had gotten him down to one night waking (from 2-3). Starting this past week he has started to wake up every three hours. I read it's because at this age they are some big developmental leaps - crawling, cruising, separation anxiety, etc - that keep their brain in overdrive. Many consider the 9 month regression worse than the 4 month one because they are much more vocal and determined. :( I am just waiting it out....at first I let him CIO since it worked back when we were sleep training but this time around he just cried louder, harder, and longer. So now I'm just nursing him quickly back to sleep and figure if he's still like this in a couple weeks I will go back to sleep training again. Hopefully it works itself out!

  • We are in the midst of it as well.  It started two weeks shy of his nine month birthday.  He is now nine month and 3 weeks, and it's still going on.  I bought the Sleep Sense program and have read through it.  Waiting for my husband to read through it so we can both support each other during it... it's def. exhausting though - I feel like I'm on another planet most days.  Tired of coming to work with red eyes...
