brushing teeth

If your babies have teeth already, do you brush them? What do you use?

Do you brush gums if there are no teeth?

Re: brushing teeth

  • I was just thinking about that because I read an article about how to care for their teeth even before they get any. DS doesn't have any yet. The article talked about wiping with a damp cloth over his gums, if they have none, to brush with a finger brush with just tiny dab of infant tooth paste front and back of the tooth (or teeth). I think I'll start wiping his gums daily.

  • damp cloth over the gums.

and is it bad that i read the title of the post and was like.. gee this should be a post about how do you find time/remember to brush your teeth?  :P

I swear I had a better memory and more time a few months ago.

  • There was definitely a point where I barely remembered to brush my teeth :)

I have been using a little finger brush but no toothpaste. The basically just want to munch on my finger though.

  • I've been meaning to start wiping with a washcloth for the last month.  How many times a day/when do you do it?

  • Just once a day so far, in the late afternoon after they eat a little bit of solid food.

  • I asked my pedi about this, and she mentioned that during bathtime, to run a clean, warm and wet washcloth over the gums to help clean them, and to do the same as the teeth were coming in.  So far, he likes the pressure, but no teeth yet!

Why that was in italics, I don't know, and I can't get it to go away!

  • W has a tooth.  We clean it, and the rest of his mouth with a wet toothbrush, right after bath, before bed.

  • He's getting two teeth now, so I need to figure out if I am going to brush them or what.  Up until now, I ran a washcloth over his gums as part of his nighttime routine. He digs it because it feels good on his gums.  Now as soon as he sees the washcloth, he grabs it and shoves it in his mouth.
  • I asked my dentist about this today, and she said just to wipe with a damp wash cloth. No need to use toothpaste until more teeth show up than just a few. Once LO turns 3 then come in for a cleaning but unless you see problems or concerns before then there's no need to come in. (This is only what she said, mind you.)
  • I have been wiping his gums with a cloth as part of his bedtime routine for a couple of months now.   Usually it just involves him chewing on the wash cloth.

He has 2 teeth now but I don't think I'm going to start using a toothbrush quite yet. The teeth are so tiny it would be hard to brush so for now just my finger and the wash cloth will have to do.
