Bed rest due to high BP at 37.4 weeks

HI LADIES! At my 36 week appointment my doctor took my blood pressure three times. It was initially 145/90, then 140/9 and finally 135/85.  No protein was found in my urine and she said to monitor it at home and to call if it ever went about 150/100. Well all week it stayed around 140/90.

At my appointment yesterday, my BP was 160/90 and they sent me over to labor and delivery immediately.  They hooked me up to monitors, took my blood, had me pee again and everything came back negative. The second they had me lay on my side while taking my BP my BP went down to 121/70 and fell all the way to 110/60 for the remaining three hours.   The nurse said that I must have white coat hypertension, but that would not explain the high readings that I had all week while sitting at home.

Anyways, my doctor came in and said she wanted me to start bed rest which is fine, but I'm confused b/c the nurse said it's not a high blood pressure problem unless you have high blood pressure while standing/sitting and laying down.  Does anyone have any experience with this?

  • I'm in the same boat.  I am not on bed rest yet for it but my BP is high at the doctors office, slightly lower at home but still high enough for cause for concern and while laying down or relaxing my BP is perfect.  My doc explained it as any stress at all causes my BP to rise so I'm supposed to be trying to rest as much as possible and to make sure I am not under any stress.  Sounds like if it doesn't calm down with this that I will be put on bed rest.

I've been removed from work and put on modified bed rest for high BP (140/90-ish).  All of my other tests also came back negative initially, however at my most recent appointment I had trace protein in my urine (and had to do another 24 hr collection).  It was explained to me that they are worried I'm at risk to develop pre-e soon based on my BP and in an effort to slow that down and keep baby baking as long as possible, I've be put on bedrest.

What does modified bed rest entail?

It's so strange.. today I'm at home on bed rest but when I get up, go to the bathroom and then sit down in a chair my BP is still high. Not stressful.  The second I lay down it lowers by like 30 points each way. I don't get it!

  • My bp started doing this around 30 weeks. I ended up hospitalized for a week at 34 weeks and put on bed rest.  Delivered at 36w6d because of my bp.  Turned out it wasn't white coat because my bp continued to be high for a few months after delivery.  Lay low and hang in there!  Not too much longer to go!
