Will you eat your own PLACENTA?!

I found this on the Bump Q&A section.  Check it out:

"When you delivery, the squishy placenta (also known as the afterbirth) will follow baby out of your belly. If you give birth in a hospital, they will generally dispose of the organ as medical waste, but if you'd like to have a look before it's trashed, just ask -- most docs will oblige. Some women choose to keep the placenta and bury it, burn it our even dry it out and take it as a supplement (it's rumored to increase youthfulness and combat postpartum depression)."

For those of you who choose to do this, and/or know people who have done it, I mean no disrespect.  I know this is a very personal choice, but personally, I think I'll skip eating my own placenta thanks.

Wow!  I didn't even know this was an option!

  • Tongue TiedHmmm I hadn't had breakfast yet and until this thought leaves my mind looks like I won't be eating.

    Thanks

  • Personally, I'm going to freeze mine then put it in the food processor and store it in tiny capsules. ?I will consume one capsule per day like a vitamin.

It's okay.  I haven't had the pleasure of actually puking yet, I have a pretty strong stomach.  I'll just have to postpone breakfast for another half hour.  Thanks for the post though, I didn't even know that existed.

  • I plan on making it into a stew and serving it at the baptismal party.
  • While I am a bit curious as to what it looks like...

    a) I don't know if I am going to look at it

    b) the thought of eating it made me dry heave

  • I'll be making a soup out of mine.  Ick!

Excited.... I can compound those capsules if you'd like.... I just learned how to do that in Pharmacy Skills lab.  Do you think Fed-Ex lets you ship placenta?

  • ditto PP...I don't even think I want to look at it, much less EAT it.  Gross.

  • It's something I am considering, which is probably a shock considering that I am the LEAST "crunchy" or "natural" person I know.

But I've been through horrible depression before and I am TERRIFIED of PPD.  I know it can be treated, but if swallowing my placenta in pill form will help combat it to begin with, I am all for it.

Blair, that really surprises me!  I never would've thought you'd consider that.  Good for you if you do it though.  I know I never could.

lol, it shocks EVERYONE when I admit it!!  I am a pro-epi, formula-feeding, working mom-to-be and the idea of me eating a placenta usually throws people for a loop!

::shrugs::  I'm not decided on it at all.  DH is pretty grossed out by it, but he says it's my choice.  Depression simply terrifies me, so I'm pretty much in line for anything that will help combat it, whether it's natural or not.

  • nope. i will not be partaking.
  • nope. all set thanks.
  • I saw mine last time.  Very strange alien-like thing.  I had no instinctive desire to eat it though.
  • We asked to see the placenta after it was delivered with DD. It was really cool to be able to see where our little one had been living for the last 9 months! I don't remember much about it because I was pretty out of it, but it was neat to see. But that's where my interest ended - I didn't eat it and won't eat it again!
  • Blair, for some reason that doesn't surprise me. I'm not sure why.

Kudos to anyone that wants to try it. I can't stomach it. For those that can, there are a lot of nutritional and health benefits to doing so

  • There is a poster on my regular board who will eat hers. I think she plans on doing it like the other poster in this thread. Freezing and then eating a little bit every day.

It's not for me, but - to each their own!

  • Ugh, this is not a question I need to see while still in the throes of morning sickness. My answer would be a resounding NO.
  • Yuck. Yuck. Yuck. Sorry.
  • I think I'd need a bit more than a rumor to make me eat my placenta.  I wonder what the research says.

It's still be argued by doctors & the FDA.  There are no conclusions yet.

  • Ive done it with my first 2, ill do it again.

  • It's a Native American tradition to eat the placenta after birth....but I think I'll be fine not taking part of the that tradition.

?i'm the poster girl for depression blair and i'm certainly terrified of ppd but still...i don't know. ?you have bigger balls than i do my friend.?

lol, we'll see if I do it.  Good thing I have 30 more weeks to decide!

  • that's true. ?well, fill me in if you do and most certainly fill me in if it works!
  • PPD sucks, I won't lie.  It sucks BAD.  But just based on what the placenta feels like exiting my body....I've never had the notion to even look at it, much less consume it.

    To each their own though.

  • Probably not but I've definately considered it.  I'm bipolar and so my risk of PPD is pretty high but since I will be working closely with my doctors in the weeks after birth, I don't think I'll be doing the placenta pill.  I will just work on getting my regular meds back up to pre-pg dosages.

  • It also helps with postpartum hemorrhaging.  After my last birth I lost a little more blood than I'd like, so I'm considering it this time.  Cytotec and pitocin lose their appeal after the second dosage... if I can eat a small piece of something totally natural instead, why not?

I wouldn't think capsules are gross at all- I mean, it's a plastic container, you're not even tasting it.

  • No thank you.  I was curious enough to get a good look after #2--it was pretty fascinating but I wouldn't eat it.  I had PPD after #1 but I didn't w/ #2...The big difference to me was Breastfeeding...I didn't w/ #1 & did w/ #2 and I had a totally different post partum experience.
