Formula question - WWYD?

DS will be 8m next week. He started taking less and less from his bottles. I am a little worried he may not be getting enough formula. He is 21lbs and about 29in. Here is his typical day. (the times are basic estimates)

2:00am 3oz bottle

7:00am 3oz bottle

8:00am 1.5oz formula mixed in with 2 tbsp Oatmeal. Container (Gerber 2nd Foods, about 3.5 oz) Fruit. Drinks about 2oz formula

12:00pm 1 container of Fruit, 1 container of Veggie, 3-4oz formula

4:00pm 1 container of Fruit, 1 container of Veggie, 3-4oz formula

7:00pm 3 tbsp Mixed Grain cereal with 2oz formula mixed in, 2oz formula

Re: Formula question - WWYD?

  • I think he's getting plenty of formula.  The pedi told me at Chloe's 6 month visit that she'll probably drop down to somewhere between 15 to 20 ounces of formula a day by the time she's 7 months.  Right now she's down to between 18 - 20 ounces a day.  She eats 2 jars of food mixed with 3 tablespoons of cereal in each (lunch and dinner).  And she also eats solids, toast and whatever we are eating for dinner (the more solids she eats the less of the puree's she eats).  She is currently just shy of 20 pounds and 27 inches.

  • Hmmmm.......what does your ped say?

Your LO is the same size as my LO.  My LO drinks about 28 ounces of formula a day.  We do 4 seven ounces bottles a day.  One at 7:30AM, 11:30AM, 3:30PM, and 7:30PM.

  • I guess I just got worried when he dropped down. The pedi did not mention anything like this at his 6m apt. I knew he would start taking less, just didn't realize, I wouldn't have to make another 6oz bottle again, LOL

    Thanks.

  • I would strive for 24 oz a day. Maybe decrease some of his solids and make the bottles bigger...especially that last bottle of the night, which could help him not need the 3 am feeding.  With that being said, my older daughter NEVER drank as much formula as they "recommended", but we were also put on Neosure (extra calorie formula) to help make up for what she didn't get.

Here is our schedule for DD2...I don't know how much she weighs now,  but 3 weeks ago she was 15.9 lbs.

When she wakes up: 7-8 oz bottle
2 hours later: 1 2nd foods baby food
2 hours later: 7-8 oz bottle
2 hours later: 1 2nd foods baby food
    2 hours later: 7-8 bottle
2 hours later: 1 2nd foods baby food (at our dinner time)
2 hours later (bedtime): 7-8 oz bottle

Obviously, if she is just really fussy or hungry acting, those times adjust some. She is doing really great with 4 bottles a day and 3 baby food times though. I will add that when we were doing one baby food a day (dinner time) she would eat two containers, so we did cut that amount back...but there have still been some occasions where she is screaming for more after one and we will do another small container (1st foods.) If we are out and about and I just miss the time we have been doing solids, then I just skip it and go to formula next. It is much more important than the solids. No matter what, she ALWAYS has 4 bottles a day.

    Allie ~ 01/26/09 ~ 7 lbs, 9 oz ~ 20.75 in. & Amelia ~ 03/16/11 ~ 8 lbs, 1 oz ~ 21 in.

  • From what my pedi said - after 6 months, the amount of formula should stay about the same, but the solids should start to increase. Maybe give a little less of the solids to see if it improves the formula intake?  I would aim for 24 oz of formula as well, but that's just what I have been told.

DD isn't eating a ton of solids yet - usually 1-2 oz, 3x per day in between bottles, and she takes 5, 5-6 oz bottle a day (usually a total of 26 - 27 oz formula a day), but she is only about 16 pounds and has always been around teh 25th% (both height / weight)

  • I think he's getting enough. On the feeding guide my pedi gave me, 8-10 month olds will get 16-32 oz of formula.

How much do you offer each time?

For the longest time, he was taking 5-6 oz with every meal (even with the solids) this has been something that started in the past few weeks. We started solids early (at 3m) he was eating 3 meals a day since 4 months. Each time, he was finishing a 6oz bottle in addition to the solids.

I was offering him 6oz until I started throwing away most of them. I started offering him 4oz and he rarely finishes the bottles.

I still offer the 6oz bottle at his breakfast and with his evening cereal before bed.
