Your grocery list - what do you do?

I realize a lot of this depends on how you plan your meals, but how do you physically make your grocery list?  Do you keep a running paper list somewhere?  Do you have it electronic?  Do you have a template of some kind that you fill in?  Please share.

I'm making a check list of sorts in Word that I can print out and keep on the fridge so when I'm planning for the week, I can check off items because it is customized to the exact things I buy.  And then there will be space for items that are unusual.

Anyway, I'd love to hear how/where you keep yours.  Now that we have four real mouths to feed (1 year old eats more than 3 year old!), our grocery situation is getting a bit chaotic and I'm trying to reign it in.

Re: Your grocery list - what do you do?

  • We usually have two Post-it notes on the counter - one for the grocery store and one for Costco - that we both add to as needed. Before we go to the store, I usually rewrite the list separated by department (I usually do produce, dairy, meat, pantry, frozen and other).

  • I do Shoprite at Home where they do my shopping for me, so everything is done online.

BUT, I do have a memo pad on my fridge to write down what I want to make and what I'm missing and need a replacement of.

  • I usually go off my weekly meal plan...so I just buy what we need for dinners and lunch.  I make my lists every Monday, and shop on Tuesday mornings while DD is in preschool.  Right before I go to the store I check my house for the other household items we might be running out of such as toliet paper, etc..

  • I keep a running list on the island.

I'm so jealous of people who can do their shopping online - I would LOVE that!!

  • I have a list on the fridge that I add to as I run out of things during the week. Then Sunday as I do my couponing and meal planning I create a paper list by department.

  • I keep a notebook with my list by the computer. I usually seperate by food and non-food categories.

  • I have a list in Word- that I print out and keep on the fridge- and highlight things as I need them. Like today I finished off a bottle of Ranch dressing. I took a bottle out of the pantry- threw it in the fridge and highlighted it on my list.

  • We mostly use peapod (online shopping) so I look at my previous lists, but I also have a notepad hanging on my fridge, and when I see Im running low on something I put it on this list. I also will add whatever special thing I might need for a meal Im making or cleaning supplies Im running low on.

  • I make a running list. But I'll make a meal plan and then start putting on the list what I need for each meal, and then any extras (like stuff for lunches, snacks, etc).

Sometimes I could have my grocery list made out a week in advance, other times an hour before we go I'm starting it.

  • I use this from the Real Simple line at Target. We keep it on the fridge and just check the boxes when we need something, or write it in if it's not a standard item. I like it. :)

  • I keep a memo pad on the fridge, and usually add things to it over a few days.  Then I head to the store and forget to take the list with me.  Every time.  I'm actually not sure why I bother with a list.

As much as I'd love to get into meal planning, and have really tried in the past, I just can't do it.  Things come up last minute with DH's work or our friends/family, or we just don't feel like eating something I've planned for a week.  It's much better for us if I decide the day of what I'm making (or perhaps the night before if something requires thawing).

  • I have a small notebook I keep in my purse.  On one page I have the menu for the week and on the facing page I keep my grocery list.  I like having the menus and lists in one place so I can flip back through when I'm meal planning and making each week's list to make sure I don't forget anything.

  • I use the Grocery List app on my iPhone to keep track if things we need as I think if them, then I have a running list in Word that is separated by my grocery store's layout that I work off of every week. Eta: i used to do the memo pad on the fridge thing but I would always think if things when I was away from home and then forget about them, so the app works better for me.

The night before I go shopping I get a blank piece of paper and a pen. Yep, I'm old school.

Then, I look at the store circular's for sales, my coupons and open up the fridge to see what's missing and make my list from there.

This is what I do also.

  • There's an app called Ziplist. You can scan an item to add it or type it in and it already knows stuff. But what I like is you can put in recipes, or I just put in the recipe title and the ingredients. Then you can tap on whatever meals you want and it puts the ingredients on the list. You can organize it by the stores isles too.

Wow cool!  I will have to check that out.

  • I have a dry erase board on the refrigerator that I write things that we run out of on.  Otherwise I don't make the grocery list until after I make the meal plan, a day or two before I go shopping.  I always write the list twice too, once to get a list of everything we need and then I rewrite it so that it is in the order of the store layout - it makes shopping easier.

  • I made a "command center" that's in the kitchen above my laptop. There are 2 frames with my print-out under the glass, so the glass is dry-erase.

One is a calendar where I write out my meal plans. Also lunch and breakfast ideas.

The other is separated into 4 sections: Groceries, Target, Costco, and Notes.

I write down my groceries on there, then I transfer to a piece of paper for shopping. When I put it on paper, I always write things down in order of where to find them at the store; items are sectioned off by area to make shopping faster and so I don't forget anything!

  • I just keep a running list on paper. I usually keep 1 extra of things that we use often like toothpaste. When I open the extra toothpaste, then I start searching for coupons and sales on toothpaste. By time the toothpaste is gone I have replenished our stock.
