Toddlers: 24 Months+

Anyone else's LO not cooperate with photos?

Ok, so I realize DD is only two, but seriously, I can not get her to smile for the camera. She won't even look at it. I try to make it fun but no matter what, when I pull out the camera she says, "no, no" and turns away. It's been going on for months and it sucks because I can't get any decent pics. Our pumpkin patch photos were a big fail along with our Halloween pics. Anyone else? Any suggestions?

  • I bribe with a treat ;) marshmallows are our current treat of choice. The last time I was trying to get a nice posed shot I put the marshmallow on top of the camera (it was on a tripod) and was being silly saying I was going to make it "fly" (flick it off) and she needed to catch it. I'd  'missed' a couple times, it'd make her laugh/smile - while looking at the camera :)

  • I bribe with the promise of candy.  It always works, and she rarely ever asks for the candy afterward.  :)

  • Great ideas! I'll give it a shot!

  • The trick I learned doing the phography for DD's class last year was asking silly questions.  My go to for my kids is "what's a pirate say?  what's a dog say?  what's a pirate-dog say?"  I find my kids at least glance my way when answering questions. And when they are silly they get excited to point that out to me.  When I did school photos- like around Christmas- "What does a BIG Santa say?  What does a teenyweeny Santa say?"  Whatever they're learning about I quiz with silly questions- always glad to show off their knowledge!

DS is into vehicles, so for him, if I make a silly vehicle sound and ask him to identify what vehicle I am.

  • Mine is the exact same way. No promise of candy, toys, anything works unless SHE wants to smile. The only time I can get occasional grins is if I'm using my iPhone and I turn the camera around to where she can see herself, then she'll give good smiles, but other than that, it's entirely up to her, no amount of begging or bribery can help. :( I'm praying it's a phase, but I really think it's just the personality of each kid.

  • You've got to get someone else to jump around behind the photographer.  Jump around like a monkey, make fart noises, play peek-a-boo behind the back of the photographer.  Always trying get their eyes centered in front of the lens, so if the photographer is kneeling at the child's level, try to also kneel when acting like a goofball.  We also use rattle toys to get their attention.

Also don't try doing photos with a child that is hungry, tired or just plain cranky....it's just a recipe for pouting and resistance towards the pictures.
