December 2011 Moms

Trying to round up the last few baby items....

We almost have everything we need....here is what I have left:

Baby sling (I'm getting the Baby K'Tan)

wipe case (still torn if I want a warmer one)

nursing cover

breathable bumper (Not in a huge hurry for this because baby will be in the pack n play the first month)

2 lingerie bags (to put all his tiny socks in and wash them in so they don't get lost )

Thermometer (anyone have any good recommendations on this? I like the the idea of the scanning ones that you run along the forehead or maybe an under the arm thermometer.)

That's it!

You need a rectal thermometer for newborns.  We got a Vicks- it got the best reviews on BRU.  It can also be used under the arm.  If I remember correctly, the temporal ones cannot be used until children are around 1 year old.  We plan on getting the Exergen- Target and Amazon have it the cheapest.

What about the thermometers that go in the ear? Have you ready anything on those?

No, I haven't.  We plan on using the rectal one until they are 1 since it can be used under the arm too.  I believe there are some that have multiple attachments so you can stick it wherever you want!  I just haven't looked it to it.

I just read that those also can't be used until much later.

I saw one of the multiple-attachment ones tonight @ BRU. I think the brand was Safety 1st. I think I may register for that one.

The baby book I've been reading recommends rectal thermometers for babies under 3 months.

  • Not much left! Good idea with the lingerie bags for socks! I just need a stroller, wipes, diapers and batteries for all the toys that need them

  • We used an under the arm thermometer for DD. It was a quick read one and worked well for us. We never took her temp rectally.

  • Both the hospital and our family doctor said absolutely do not use a rectal thermometer. Unless you are used to using them, my doctor said parents usually do more harm than good because they end up damaging the rectal tissue. An ear thermometer is perfectly fine and accurate for a newborn. That's what the nurses used on DD when she was born and that's what we use at home. Just a thought.

  • I'm a Peds nurse and can tell you its not recommended to take rectal temps. We only do rectals in the ER and specific cases. It is really easy to puncture the bowel. We even do under the arm on the NICU babies. I got a Moby brand temporal and ear combo from Target. I also don't recommend using any type of bumper. I know people will give differing opinions and since it is your baby you get to decided. I just feel like you worked so hard to get him/her here safely why risk it.

The breathable bumpers are the mesh ones that are very thin and basically just serve to keep arms and legs from getting in between the crib slats. I have a regular bumper that came with my bedding that I have in the crib for looks but that's coming out when baby starts sleeping in the crib.

I would never feel comfortable using a rectal thermometer and so I like the idea of the ear ones or under the arm.

  • I always used an ear thermometer...my pediatrician just adds a degree on the really small babies. They use an ear thermometer when I take the kids in for an appointment.

The scanning thermometer doesn't work as well in my opinion. I have one and my kids won't stay still long enough to swipe the thermometer correctly over their forehead (especially the 18 month old). So I don't feel like I am getting an acurate reading.
