kiddo has the white spots on his tongue and i've had slight shooting nipple pain. i've been taking a probiotic 2x a day (acidolpholus/bifidus), eating lots of activia yogurt and rinsing my nipples with a vinegar solution, but everything seems the same. been going on for maybe a week and a half. i'm also breaking a probiotic capsule and letting LO suck it off my finger per these instructions: https://www.nbci.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=12:candida-protocol&catid=5:information&Itemid=17
i have my 6 week postpartum check tomorrow so i'll bring it up there. anything else i should try/be doing? i'm on the fence about trying gentian violet since it's so messy, but i've read the anti-fungal stuff pedis prescribe aren't very effective.
Re: Thrush
the grapefruit seed extract is awesome. i use it now on myself whenever i feel a vaginal yeast infection coming on too.
when we had thrush, i did two full rounds of diflucan and everything the LC told me to do until i finally caved and did the GV. GV was the only thing that worked for me. it will make lo's mouth dark and your nipple dark for a few days, but i just wore a black tshirt to bed and put a big towel down in her bassinet to prevent any stains on the sheets. i put it on a qtip for her to suck on and it didnt get on her face or clothes.
I got the grapefruit seed extract at sprouts and I think that peoples carries the gv. The key is to get the pure grapefruit seed extract as opposed to grapeseed oil which is not the same.
Here is an article, I think this might be the one that boxer gave me but I'm not sure.

Per kellymom, the vitamin e at the end of the article is contraindicated and not recommended for some reason. I will say that the grapefruit seed extract when applied to your nipples can make them really, really dry. So, I sometimes used vitamin e but would apply it right after nursing and then by the time I fed again, most of it was gone. However, I think you could just put some olive oil on it and that would work too.
As far as the oral extract, I can't remember the exact dosage but I think it was 250mg for 3x a day. I remember that I would pop like 3 pills, 3 times a day. I wasn't worried too much about overdosing on it because I was really desperate!
Also, when applying to your nipples I would always mix a bowl of it every morning and then apply is with cotton balls. I would use a new cotton ball every time that I dipped it in the bowl that way I wasn't infecting my mixture. Make sure to let your nipples breathe as much as possible, wash your nursing bras in hot water, use disposible nursing pads until it's gone and make sure to change them often!
Hope this helps! I'm so sorry, thrush sucks.
thanks! super helpful. i've been walking around the house half naked to air them out and am thinking of sunbathing in the nude in my backyard to get some sunshine on them. desperate times calls for desperate measures!!!
ok that's good to know. i've just heard how big of a mess it can be.
