Can a Bf baby over eat?

DD is 4 weeks old tomorrow and the last few days she has been eating more often during the day. Normally I only nurse her on one side at a time for about 10-15 min and she seems satisfied, but today she's been acting like one side isn't enough. I offered her the other side and she nursed for another ten minutes. So she went from the usual ten min feeding to a 25 min feeding! Is that normal at this age? I've never had her nurse both sides so i'm just worried about her possibly over eating.

Re: Can a Bf baby over eat?

  • Not usually at the breast.

My sister's baby would overeat then projectile vomit. If it's a problem, you'll know. Sounds like LO is just hungry and upping your supply by eating more and frequently. Totally a good thing.

  • There is a growth sport at 3 weeks, so she may be hungrier than usual for a few days. Around 5 weeks DS started taking both breasts at every feeding and still does.

  • I go to these Mother/Baby Tea events that the lactation department at the hospital that I delivered at hosts on Monday/Wednesday/Friday.  They are lead by LCs who will answer any questions we have.  This has come up many times, and each time it is asked the answer comes back "you cannot overfeed an exclusively breastfed baby"....
