XP- Congested baby

LO is a little over 2 weeks old. She had been sleeping great except for the past couple of nights. She wakes up sounding very congested but there is no snot in her nose; it sounds more like its in her chest like a cold. I just bought a humidifier but it doesn't seem to be helping that much. I try to clean out her nose just in case but nothing comes out. I was going to try the saline drops but I've heard that they aren't that safe so I left a message for her pedi to make sure.

Anybody else have this issue? Any suggestions on how I can make her more comfortable?

I asked about this the other day and some recommendations were humidifier at night and saline drops. Last night was the first with the humidifier and drops, and this morning she not congested at all! We only did one drop in each nostril and it seemed to help almost right away.

My DS is the same way and has been since birth and it's worse at night than it is during the day. My DD was the same way but for her it was because her nasal pasages were so narrow, to the point that you couldn't see up her nose, and it eventually went away.  I asked my pedi about it before & she said it's just extra mucus in his system but I thought it would be gone by now.  We have DS's 1 month appt. tomorrow so I will be asking again.

E is always very congested. Saline drops are actually recommended by pedis so I'm not sure why you were told they aren't safe. For E, I squirt saline up her nostril and then use my Nosefrida to suck her out. I took her to the pedi and that is what they told me to do. Also, using the humidifier is awesome! If you are still concerned, you could call your pedi just for peace of mind. But newborns often sound congested. I have also heard that you try propping LO up a little while she sleeps. It can help with the congestion.

I had this exact thing happen to my DD this week.  We just got back from the pediatrician and we were told that it is because she has a clogged tear duct.  Does your LO have one eye or both eyes that water a lot?  The pedi told us her tears drain into her nasal passages, keeping things cleared up and moistened.  While one of her ducts is clogged, she is only getting half the amount of tears to clear things up.  He said that it will unclog naturally and to use a humidifier, saline drops, and what PP have said.  Hope your LO feels better soon!

I've never heard that saline drops are not safe. If you put a couple drops in each nostril, especially before feeding, it will help loosen and drain the mucus.

DS has had this same problem since he was < 1 month old.  In our case, it's reflux that causes it.  The milk in the back of his throat sounds like congestion.  That and a cough are his only reflux symptoms.

I'm glad you wrote this! My LO does have clogged tear ducts, in both eyes. I guess that must be contributing to her congestion! That makes me feel a little better.

As for the safety of the saline drops- a friend told me her pedi had said to use the drops sparingly, as they can dry out the nose if used too often. Sorry for the confusion...they are safe to use but I guess like anything else you just have to make sure you don't use too much!

Hopefully the humidifier helps. I just got the saline drops so we'll try that tonight too. If not, we'll have to try the shower. Thanks again!
