Question re PP Depression and Disability Insurance

I never thought I would be in this position but, after a terrible accident this past week involving DD#1, my issue with anxiety (mainly) and post pardum depression (which seems to be a result of the anxiety) is out of control. After two days in the ICU at Children's Hospital things are looking good but I have never been so terrified in my entire life.

The baby is 4 weeks old and since a few weeks before his birth I was seeking medical attention for this, going to counseling and I have an RX for Zoloft but, because I am nursing, I am not willing to risk taking it. That was all before the incident this week. Up until know I have been doing everything I could to stay off of drugs.

Does anyone know if post pardum depression / anxiety can be considered a disability? I will consult my counselor and OB this week but I was curious if anyone else had this experience.

*** I am at the point where I am having trouble leaving the house, having night terrors and flashbacks to the accident so strong that, even while awake, they are so strong that my arms fly up. It is unreal.

Re: Question re PP Depression and Disability Insurance

  • It sounds like you actually have some PTSD that stems from the accident. I'm really sorry. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that at least for most insurance purposes, your doctor would just need to fill out some paperwork explaining the condition from which you are suffering and how it's impacting your ability to return to your regular work duties. They will review and approve/deny the leave at that time. Good luck to you!

  • I've been dealing with clinical depression for ~13 years now.  I've gone off my zoloft a few times, but have been mostly on it during this time.   I've gestated, delivered, and nursed 3 babies all while taking the zoloft.   This is the SSRI of choice if you are pregnant and/or nursing.  I did serious soul-searching and considered discontinuing it while PG and nursing, but that was not a good plan.  It's a personal choice, but for us, the zoloft makes a world of difference and all 3 babes are healthy and, apparently, normal.  Please do what you must to take care of yourself!
  • One criteria for getting awarded disability is if the condition is expected to last a year or more, or expected to end in your death. I agree with the PP though, that it sounds more like PTSD. I can't remember if you said you have a therapist. If so, he/she should be able to help you apply for disability. Or, you can apply online, and they will contact your mental health caregivers to get the info they need. I would encourage you to definitely talk to someone about this.

Oh and I took Zoloft while I was pregnant and continue now while breastfeeding. My son is healthy.
