I am mostly just a lurker but was hoping I could get some opinions from you gals over here. DS is 22 months & still RF, he is tiny for his age as well. He probably won't reach the height limit for RF in either carseat until he's like 5. While I really would like to keep him RF forever, he is MISERABLE in the car & I feel so badly for him. Now, I have no clue if he will be any better FF because it may very well be that he just hates the car, period. He has some SN & is very sensitive to movement, sounds & a whole lot of other things. I'm wondering if his movement sensitivity is exacerbated by being backwards. We've tried different carseats, different positions in the backseat, toys, snacks & nothing has really helped. My thoughts are that maybe if he's FF he will be calmer b/c he can see me easier & I can more easily hand him his bottle, etc from that position. I REALLY want to do what is safest for him but at what point do you turn them around? Especially if they're small & could potentially still fit the guidelines going into kindergarten, do you really keep them RF THAT long? I am looking for all sorts of opinions from both sides. Please tell me what you've done & why? DH is absolutely no help because he just says to turn him around! TIA & I look forward to joining in more now!

Re: Those who are doing extended RF carseat...HELP!!!
My son went through a phase where he hated the car and I'm assuming being RFing. It lasted a good 4 months so I just bought a DVD player and mounted it on the back headrest so he could watch a show. I'd rather him have too much TV time instead of turning him FFing.
I am really pro-RFing, BUT I also believe if you try everything you can and he's still miserable RFing and is happy FFing, keep him FFing. He's small, but he is almost a year over the old recommendation and almost to the new recommendation.
Okay, so my daughter was miserable in the car for a while too, so around her second birthday we turned her around. Turns out that was worse! She hated having her legs dangling and how upright a FF seat is. She couldn't sleep, kept dropping her toys and blankie and stuff. We turned her back around and she's been happier than ever now that she's tried both and realizes she prefers RF.
At this point, since she hates FF we will keep her RF until the limits of her seat (so 45 lbs or 1.5" from the top) because it's a more peaceful trip that way. My hope is that she's 4-5 and mature so we can go straight to a booster seat from the RF seat. This is commonly done in Sweden and I think it may be the ideal for safety so it's what we hope to do.
