Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Career decision wwyd (nbr)

I'm so torn. I've tslked to my family and friends about this, but if you guys don't mind, I'd like a neutral/outsider opinion.

I work full-time 3 nights a week. 7p-730a in a NICU. I LOVE my job. But it kills me to work all night and then send my baby to daycare so I can sleep before returning to work again. I really want part-time. There has been nothing available in my unit since my retunr from maternity leave.

There is a position aval on another floor. Mother/baby. I interviewed and was offered the position. As much as I love my job, I love my family more, so I thought I would take the new position.

My current manager calls me today and says she knows I interviewed elsewhere and if I can hold out she should be able to offer part-time after the new year.

I'm very torn. If I go to mother baby I would have to go through 3 months of orientation, classes, etc. But it doesn't sound like I'd be guarenteed part time in my current unit. So it would be taking a gamble if I stayed there and waited for the new year.

WWYD? Stay and wait for part time, or go to another floor with a job you think you would like, but don't know anyone and be certain you could have part-time?

  • It's a tough decision. BUT I have a small issues with the "should", it doesn't sound certain, just sounds like she doesnt want to loose you. Which is a good thing :) I say go with your gut!

  • Stay and wait for your part time. To have a job you LOVE and a boss that doesn't seem like they want to lose you vs a complete unknown.

WAIT IT OUT. New Year will be here in NO TIME

  • I would go to your manager & talk to her about it...Let her know that you want a definite part time position if you make it work until the start of the new year... then & tell her exactly why you wanted the change. I would also get in writing but thats just because I've been burnt by employers that  promised things & then didn't come through in the end... If all this happens I might consider staying but if not, you have to do whats right for you  & your family & makes you the happiest. Hope it helps & works out for the best!!

  • I would probably take the part time position. I don't like taking risks though...

Exactly. Your current manager is not offering you anything concrete. If you decline the new position and the part time doesn't open up in the NICU, where will you be then? I'd either get something in writing about a reduction of hours for your current position, or jump ship to the new one.

  • Personally, I would take the job that is available NOW. The reason I am in a new position where I work is because I got tired of waiting for a position that was "supposed" to come available for me. I couldn't wait anymore. If the part-time option where you are now, it's a for sure thing, then it's not worth it to me.
