CMV and nursing?

Have any of you been tested/confirmed of having CMV?  If so, did your doctor recommend that you continue nursing?  I am not sure if I have ever had CMV, but my toddler was just diagnosed with hearing loss and we are waiting all the tests to figure out the reason why.  I went on the internet (I know I should not have, but I did) and CMV can be passed through breast milk...so I am freaking out because I am nursing my 7 month old.  My OB said that they have never had a nursing Mom stop nursing, but I was curious if any of you had experienced any of this...?

 Thank you.

Re: CMV and nursing?

  • I did have CMV which was contracted at the beginning of my pregnancy.  From what I know congenital CMV is dangerous to the fetus and can cause birth defects, however to a normal healthy person/child the infection will most likely go unnoticeable.  I am guessing that if they are suspecting that your toddler's hearing loss is due to CMV then it means that you had a primary infection during your pregnancy. I contracted it from my 2 year old at the time and for her, being in good health, it was having a fever for 2 days and generally under the weather. I would believe your doctor that it is safe to continue to breastfeed.

  • Thank you.  I found out from my cord blood bank that they actually run those tests and I did not have it.  It doesn't explain my LO's hearing loss, but does put me at ease with nursing.
