I am never giving anyone a baby blanket as a gift again.
Which sort of sucks because I knit and love to make blankets for people. I made 3 for B!
However, we got SO MANY blankets/quilts as gifts for her. Handmade and otherwise. I don't even have anywhere to store them, so they are just piled on the spare bed in her room.
And now I'm sort of embarrassed that I used to give out blankets because I never realized how common of a gift it is. It's like the crystal bowl and candlesticks of weddings gifts...of which I ended up with 14 and 7 pairs respectively.
Re: Important thing I learned after having a baby
Ha! I just emailed a friend that is pg and told her not to register for any except for Aden & Anais swaddles. We have 10 that were gifts. However, I disagree on the handmade ones. We have 3 of those and I feel like they are all pretty special!
I got more crystal vases than bowls I think-and only one set of candlesticks! However, I got 2 cake stands. Neither of which have ever been used.
We didn't get a ton. I think we got three? One we use all the time now (in fact I almost need to find out where it was purchased so I can buy another). One I'll probably never use. The third my mom made from the quilt that I used until it was in pieces. I probably won't use that one either, to be honest. We do have a square from that quilt framed and hanging on the wall.
We ended up with:
5 quilts (2 handmade)
2 kintted/crocheted blankets
6 fleece blankets
Plus the 3 I made.
We use one fleece in the stroller and I used one of the knitted ones in her infant car seat. I hung one handmade quilt on the wall. The rest take up a good portion of the not-very-large closet in her room.

They were time-limited for us. There was a period of time early on when you could not have too many swaddle blankets and burp cloths, but they've all been put away for months. I love the handmade blankets, but in LA I just don't use them much.

I will never give anyone a stuffed animal. I have so many that I don't know what to do with them.
Ah, I hope you reconsider about giving homemade blankets. Those are the best.
