I don't take it but my MIL does and I would definitely not even let her watch LO once she is born if she is still taking it. She does stuff in her sleep and doesn't remember and she hallucinates. I know some people are fine on it but the possible side effects are scary enough for me not to ever touch it!
I was going to start taking it before I got pregnant as I have had insomnia for years. (This pregnancy seems to have knocked some of the insomnia out of me!) I had asked my friends if anyone took it and one of them said her mother did. They found her in the middle of the night in the closet eating pretzels, almost choking, asleep. After that I decided no.
My mom took the other one...I forget what it is called. She has had no problems. Cymbalta?

My DH takes it once and a while, and let me tell you if you don't go to bed almost immediately you'll turn into a beast! We had some awful arguments when he had taken Ambien and didn't go right to bed, then he remembered nothing the next morning. I'd be cautious because you don't always know what the side effects will be.
I took ambien all the time before getting pregnant, pretty much every night. I had no side effects at all - no crazy behavior at night or anything else. It does start working really quickly, so make sure you take it right before you get into bed. I was used to melatonin, which took forever to work for me, and the first time I took ambien I tried to shower right after before getting into bed. I was stumbling around like a drunk person.
I asked my doctor about taking it during pregnancy and she said it's fine, just to only take it when I really need it and not every night. If I have a few nights of terrible sleep I'll take one on the weekend to try to catch up.
I used to take the generic version for jetlag when I would visit my dad in Germany. It was amazing. I loved it. If they didn't prescribe me only 6-8 pills, it would be the one thing on this earth (besides Nutella) that I could be in danger of becoming addicted to. I never had any side effects.
I was taking melatonin or Tylenol pm before I got pregnant and the doc said no melatonin but the Tylenol pm was fine. My last dr visit, she prescribed ambien and it sucks! I sleep way way lighter, have nightmares and I don't sleep as long as I like, or should. I'm done. I have taken it 3 nights in a row and I told my hubby last night he has been snoring was more and louder the last few nights so he knew something was up. Not again.
