Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

My 1 year old is EXTREMELY clingy! Help???

My little girl is one year old and she is extremely clingy with me and her father. If you set her down and act like you're going to walk away, she starts wailing. If you even ACT like you're going to set her down, she bursts into tears. It's horrible. I can barely get any housework done, cooking dinner is a struggle, even just a quick trip to the restroom. The only time she's okay (and this doesn't always work) is if she has puffs on the tray of her high chair and Yo Gabba Gabba on the television. How do I STOP this?? She didn't start doing this until we moved about 2 months ago, so for that period of time it's been a nightmare for both me and my husband. Please, ANY suggestions are welcomed and appreciated!

  • Buy an Ergo and strap her to your back when you need to cook or clean.

Since my child cries every time I pee, I'm not going to give you advice on how to stop it.  It's normal for little ones to go through stages of separation anxiety.

  • My DS turned one a week ago and is the same way lately and we didn't even move or have any major changes!  I assume it is just the age and separation anxiety.  I've gotten really good at doing things with only one arm free.  :)

  • I would wear her.  As toddlers start becoming mobile and moving throughout the house, they need to know you are still there.  Like all phases in parenting, this to shall pass.  Just think it won't be long before she has you drop her off blocks from the movie theater or school.

  • Unfortunately this is a very common stage. I second the advice of wearing your daughter. Sometimes it's the only way I can get things done! Make sure you keep moving though, since some kids get restless if they are still.

Sometimes it helps to realize that it's OK if they cry a little. If you have to run to the bathroom or take something out of the oven, they can deal for a few minutes. Good luck!
