Food Allergy

A vent of sorts

My son is on Elecare for a milk/soy allergy.  The GI has done an upper GI, a swallow study, a 24 hour PH probe and an upper endoscopy.  I haven't got the results from the PH probe yet but the endoscopy found 2 ulcers that the Dr. said should heal with the Elecare and they will likely put him on Carafate this week.  He is also on Zantac twice daily and Prevacid once daily.  He is still projectile vomiting, constantly spitting up, reflux, crying, and even getting choked and the reflux coming out of his nose.  He has poor weight gain but the Dr. doesn't want to fortify his formula until he can actually keep his formula down.  He has been on the Elecare for about 2 months now and I really feel like there has been little to no change. I just don't know where to go from here.  I know there are worse things that could be wrong with him but I'm scared for him.  Thanks for letting me vent.

Re: A vent of sorts

  • Sorry you are going through this with your little guy.. Just wondering if he has been checked for plyoric stenosis?

  • He was checked at 6 weeks and the tech caught it during a spasm and had the sr look. He said that he didn't have it but that it could develop but the GI doesn't seem to want to revisit it. I don't honestly know much about it though.

  • Has he had a gastric emptying study done? Delayed gastric emptying can make reflux awful & none of the usual treatments will work. The only other thing I can think of is a potential corn allergy? Elecare does contain some corn, the other amino acid based formula, neocate does not. I would ask you GI about both. DS ended up with a feeding tube for 9 months because of reflux & failure to thrive, so I know how awful it is! Hang in there!

hope you get some results soon!
