Waiting for the First Ultrasound!

I was excited last week when I was scheduled for my first OB/GYN appointment! I knew I'd get to see the ultrasound, maybe hear the Doppler, and get some info regarding how far along I was, etc. My appointment is scheduled for this morning at 11:30. I just got a call from the office letting me know, they didn't realize they'd made a mistake, and that my appointment today is only an orientation appointment for paperwork!!!!!!! They then tell me that my first real appointment won't be for another week and a half! Talk about a bummer! I'm going to ask them anyway because of the family history if I can get a Doppler just to be comfortable. Sigh. Thanks for letting me vent everyone! This is the first time around for my husband and I and we are just SO excited and want to take every precaution!

  • Don't be upset if you can't hear anything via doppler. They didn't even try it with me at 9 weeks and a few days. I still haven't heard my babys heartbeat (I go to the doc tomorrow).

  • I'm in the same boat as you!  I had my first appointment at 7 weeks, but again, it was just to give paper work and answer any questions.  I don't get the actual prenatal checkup until week 9, then I do blood work week 10, and can't get the ultrasound until week 11 at the earliest.  Sucks waiting, but should be able to see lots by then!! I am so anxious though because my husband keeps psyching me out about twins! lol
  • I agree with pp that you shouldn't be upset if you can't hear anything on the doppler because it is so early.  At this point, the best way to hear the heartbeat is with an internal u/s.  That stinks that you have to wait for the "real" appt.

  • If you are 7 weeks it makes no sense for them to attempt to hear the HB with Doppler unless you are having a transvaginal ultrasound. Mine could barely be heard at 12w with abdominal Doppler.

Most first time u/s for a non-high risk pregnancy is 8-10 weeks.

I do agree with this because it's probably just going to cause you more anxiety.  It's VERY unlikely you'd hear anything and I imagine that would be worse than not even trying.

  • Thanks everyone! All my bloodwork came back good last week! Just going to keep praying and waiting!
  • Got the first ultrasounds today! The doctor had us do a regular belly ultrasound and a vaginal ultrasound so we could get a better picture! We saw the fetus and heard the heartbeat on both and it was amazing! We're first time parents so it was an amazing experience to have together!
