Upstate NY Babies

Vasectomy vs. tubal ligation

DH and I are 99% sure we're done after baby #2. One of us will get "fixed" afterwards. If I have a repeat c/s then it'll be me, but if I have #2 vaginally then it's a toss up (most likely he would have it done but is not thrilled about the idea).

What is your experience with either procedure? What's the recovery like for either (if you had a c/s is the recovery any worse?)?  Does insurance cover any of it (I'm sure that varies with coverage)?

Re: Vasectomy vs. tubal ligation

  • DH will be getting a vasectomy.  He is really excited about it haha.  We both only want 2 kids, but he reeaaallly only wants 2 kids.  Like would actually get angry when people would joke to him that baby2 could have been twins before I got my first ultrasound.  He would have gone the moment the second line showed up on the stick if it were up to him.  I want him to wait until the baby is about 6 months old(bc of risk of sids decreasing then - morbid I know), but I am thinking it will end up happening around 2 months or so.  He has already said he refuses to have any sex after baby2 is born until he gets it done.

  • dh had a vasectomy when I was 8 weeks pp.  We figured it was the safest time since there was no way I could get pregnant since we weren't going to sleep together up until that point.  Dh's vasectomy was on a tuesday and he was sore for 2 days.

We made the decision for it to be dh b/c he is older and it is easier on him that it would be on me.  Our insurance covered it 100%.  That is another reason we did it at that time b/c we completely met our deductible last year and it was free.  If we waited until this year we would have had bills from it.

  • I had the tubal ligation done with my repeat c/s and there was no additional recovery with it.  It was like a 5 minute procedure done right after the baby was born.

  • Oh and as far as insurance, mine covered it.  It was supposed to be like a $60 co-pay, but I have never gotten a bill for it, so I am not sure if it got lumped into the overall operation cost.

  • I was going to get Essure in three years when my Mirena is due to come out, but I am loving the Mirena (NO AF!) so much that I think I am going to get another Mirena put in.
  • I think DH is going to get a V when the time comes to do something permanent. I don't want to go through early menopause - which is a possible side affect and my co-worker at my last job had such problems when she had it done at 30. She scared me from having it done.

Same here.  I'm not sure about insurance, I'm still waiting to check my itemized bill when it comes in the mail.

  • If we do end up having another child, I'll have a tubal with that c-section. DH has said he'd have V at any time, but I am not so sure I want him to do it.
  • When the time comes, DH will be getting the big V as he knows there is no way I would voluntarily be signing up for major surgery, but if I was getting a c/s anyway, I might consider it.
