Baby's Initials

Has anyone thought about their baby's initials, and thrown away some names because of it??

We love the name Noah Eliazer, and our last name starts with a W, so the initials will be NEW. I'm not totally in love with that idea. However, our other name is Jacob, and we really want to keep the middle name Eliazer, soooo...Jacob is definitely out for now (we are Jewish, but having the baby's initials be JEW would not be ideal!!).

Is NEW weird? What do you guys think?

Re: Baby's Initials

  • I'm not even thinking of initials. My friend just realized her 7 month old son's initials are PMS though. That was funny when she realized it. We'd been taking bets on how long it would take her.
  • Loading the player...
  • I don't think it is weird.

Our son's initials are GNP.  Hehe.   One of our possible names would give this kid the initials MVP... and that cracks me up.

  • Most people just use first and last name intials (like when you sign a document etc). I can't think of too many times in like when my intials were posted so I dont see an issue.

  • nope, i haven't given it a thought.  our last name starts with J, so i think we might be in the clear?  like pp said, unless it spelled a cuss word or some horrible organization, like KKK for example, i don't think i would worry about it.

  • I went to middle school with a girl who had an LL Bean backpack with her initials on it - A.S.S!

  • I think about it because eventhough it is more normal to just use the first and last initials it is possible that the middle will come up or become an issue.  This being said because my dear mother didn't give me my fathers last name when I was first born so for a short 2 years my intials were FAT that is not the best especially if it had stuck and going through school not being the smallest that just would have fueled the fire.  My intials after the change became FAP which means nothing so I was cool with it.

I tend to put all 3 when I intial things because we had this project in junior high were we had to create a brand (as in branding cattle; from the country so this was a valid assignment) and I used my initals connected to where you could tell them apart, but they were together lik HH where the middle line connects both H's.

My married last name gives me FAQ which I find funny, but all three initials kind of are important to both myself and DH which is why our DD (he changed his last name from Smith) did not get his mothers middle name making her original initials to be ASS like his mothers was before she got married.

Totally up to you but just know you are not alone in thinking of all 3.

  • Unless they spell something terrible like STD or KKK, I don't think initials are that big of a deal.

  • I went to school with a boy who had a hyphenated last name, and his initials (I SWEAR) were D.A.M-N. Even in fifth grade, we thought it was the funniest thing! Poor kid. I don't think NEW is bad, considering you hardly ever use the initials, and it you do, its not usually in that order. I am a monogram freak, and all of the stuff I have monogrammed goes first inital, last initial, middle initial. So, while my sons initials are L.S.W, all of his cute smock stuff I will eventually get monogrammed will saw L.W.S.

  • LO's name is going to be Arya. I liked the Aria spelling, but SO loves the 'y'. We're stuck on middle names so SO asked for suggestions on FB. His mom suggested Nicole, which is nice, but it would make her name Arya N. ___   I had to point it out to SO, but at least we agree that any 'N' middle names are out of the question.

  • I've thought about this a lot too because the name combination I like best has ARS intials.

  • Okay, I'm going to throw my LO's possible initials in here, too, because I've been worried about the same thing.  How bad is M.A.N. for a girl?  DH really likes the name Abigail.  I like it, but I've known (and taught) too many for me to want to use it as a first name.  So far he seems stuck on it.  I thought about suggesting it as a middle name, but our last name begins with an "N."  That will make for a lot of "spelled" words in her initials.  I like Clara as a first name, but then she'd be CAN.  I really love Molly, but then she'd be MAN.  Is MAN way too terrible for a little girl's initials? Confused

  • We can't even decide on a first name.  Then we have to move on to the middle name.  If we can get that far (unless the initials are offensive) we are not budging!

  • Yep- Ive considered this alot. Our last name starts with a D and the girls names I was leaning towards were Beatrice Eleanor, or Beatrice Ann/Aurora.... which would give us a B.E.D. or a B.A.D... I can't bring myself to do this to a little girl.

  • For some reason, even though we haven't made any progress, I'm always thinking about initials. Our last name starts with "G", so I feel like there are a lot of combos to avoid (EGG, NAG, HAG, WIG). DH and I's initials are each DRG and DMG and I always think of us as "drug damage".
  • Haha okay, I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking about this! :) Thanks for your input, everyone!

  • We considered initials a lot when choosing LO's name. Her initials will be RML, which are fine to me. One of my cousin's initials are TNA. She was hoping once she got married they would change, but her husband's last name is an A name as well so she's stuck with it

    Me (33). DH (37). DD (2.2012). MCs x4. After 4 years & 7 months, due 4.2018!

  • DS's initials will be GRL or QRL. DH thought he might get made fun of for GRL but I just rolled my eyes--how many kids are going to know his full name, then put the initials together? Not many. And a monogram would be GLR.

One of my girl options ended up with the initials FML which I decided we couldn't do to a child.

  • Our lil girls initials will be CNN.  Monogrammed it will be NCN.  Two people pointed out the CNN thing, but I was like hey maybe she'll be a reporter, like I always wanted to be!

  • We definitely have considered it in our discussions.  One name that came up today was Carolyn Olivia which is great but with our last name the initials would be COW. Horrible!

  • My DD's initials are BMM.  We did consider this before she was born, and of course we hope she doesn't get teased about BM, but we were totally settled on her name, and not willing to change it.  I hope that doesn't make us bad parents.  I've always hoped she'll marry into another last name that doesn't start with M.
  • My husband and I were just discussing middle names today, and my favorite idea was to take a part of my maiden name (which I've kept as a middle name): Swan.  Took a minute for me to put together that her first initial is A and her last initial is also S.  Moral of the story: we're still looking for a middle name.

  • The coolest initial combo I've ever seen was a girl named Megan whose initials were MEG

That said, I wouldn't stress too much about it unless it's something horrid.  My son's initials are BRR, and if this baby is a girl (we find out soon!) it'll be RMR.  Or, who knows because we're clueless on boy names.

  • I don't think it matters too much. I wouldn't throw out a name I loved due to initials.

I was just thinking about my friend whose initials are KKK.  It wasn't done intentionally, but just kind of happened that way.  Like the PP mentioned, she just uses her first and last name initials.

  • I dated a guy in college whose initials were STD. Surely his parents thought about that. I laughed behind his back some.
  • This has GOT TO BE the best post I've seen in a long time. :) I just keep giggling! haha

  • Our current name contender would give our son the initials BSC.  Now, not everyone is going to jump to understand it but some will.  I haven't decided it's a deal killer yet.

  • I wouldn't give your kid the initials JEW just for the sake of being teased in school. Our daughters initials will be APS which is fine but our monogram for our wedding was LSD so we didn't use it lol

  • I don't think it's weird to have NEW as the initials.

I didn't give the initials much thought. The only thing I thought of after we picked out boy name is aww we can call him AJ (Austin James)

  • If this baby is a boy, his initials will be I.S.H. (Either Isaac or Isaiah.) We're just going wtih it. Kids are going to find reasons to pick no matter what, and we really love both of those names.

I think you're fine with Noah. Is Eliazer a family name?

  • I don't really think it matters. Unless your kid wants an LL bean back pack later in life :) My initials spelled SAD growing up, my sister was ADD and my dad was LTD. After I got married SAD turned to SAP. Go with what you like, but JEW maybe a little to crazy Lol, coming from a Jewish girl.

  • My DDs initials are OAF and her cousins call her that sometimes but I love her name so I don't care!  Her name is Ophelia Amelie.

I would probably avoid JEW I guess although really folks aren't going to right her full initials for much.
